Please explain why you listed the raw "DMPL" 1878 Morgan twice, ending the listing both times within less than 24 hours of each launch?

  • I ended it the first time so I could add some better pictures. After I did that I ended up trading the coin to another collector so I had to end it again. Sorry about that. I know there were quite a few people who were watching that one.

  • I had the Franklin Half listed as private when it was listed at $2,150 as a store item. I did that before Ebay started to disguise the bidders identities, as a safety measure for the buyer. Not everyone that spends that much money on a coin wants their user name to be displayed publicly for the whole world to see. There's absolutely no reason to be concerned. I just forgot to unmark it as private when I changed the listing to an auction. image

Yes ! That purple toned 1949 Franklin is incredible ; however -you do realize that if you believe the tone to be real , you would have a much better chance of getting your price or MUCH MORE .........if you were to have the coin slabbed .
  • Yeah, I know. There are several coins that I listed at a fixed price that are going to be sent in to be graded if they don't sell. I actually sent the 1949 Franklin in to NGC, but they body bagged it. I also sent in a rainbow toned 1941-S nickel that been graded MS-65 the first time I sent it in. It has bold full steps and it's cleaner than another 1941-S that I have that they graded MS-66FS, so I cracked it out and tried for the MS-66FS. They bagged that one too, claiming it was improperly cleaned. ???????. They also bagged a monster toned 1955 nickel that I pulled from an original double mint set that I personally had the pleasure of opening for the first time ever. The reason they provided for not grading it was "PVC Damage". ???????. The coin had never even touched any type of plastic at all until I sent it in, but the holder I used was not a PVC plastic. Every person that has seen the Franklin is certain that it is original toning. I've showed the coin to other collectors, a few dealers, and Brandon Kelley from Anaconda Rare Coins. The opinion that it is natural toning has been unanimous so far, with the exception of NGC.

In the submission prior to the last with NGC, they graded two artificially toned coins. One was an MS-66* and the other was MS-67*. I did not know they were AT when I submitted them, but I discovered that they were much later. I think NGC determines a coin's grade by pulling them from a hat or spinning a wheel. NGC has really been a huge disappointment recently. I can't figure out how the hell they get the grades they assign on some of the coins they certify. I've seen way too many over-graded coins, under-graded coins, AT's that are slabbed, and problem free gems get bagged with NGC. That just goes to show that you should always buy the coin, and not the slab. I know the coin will get more money in a holder, but I personally won't pay too much of a premium for someone else's opinion when I can judge for myself. That's where the hobby of collecting coins has gone though.

I'll have the 1949 Franklin slabbed by PCGS if it doesn't sell as a fixed price listing, but it won't be available at the same price again. I had one guy offer me $1,500 for it if I get it slabbed, regardless of the actual grade. I know most people won't spend that much money on a raw coin (even though it can be returned for a full refund), but I figured I'd put it out there and see what happens with it. I imagine it will more than likely be in my next coin submission to PCGS. I've got quite a few other monsters with toning of an equal caliber as the Franklin that are not listed, and are awaiting certification. Keep an eye on my auctions. I've got some amazing coins that will be listed in about a month. Once I get these beauties slabbed, most will be listed with a $0.99 starting bid and no reserve.

Hey , I tell you what .............you moved up a few notche's in my book .
Your honesty and candor are much appreciated ; i agree wholeheartedly that this AT/NT game the slabbing services play is a crapshoot.

Good luck getting that '49 in a PCGS holder -if you do I`d be happy getting into a bidding war with the other fools !

And that ANaconda feller - If he thought it real tone and since he's such a freakin' expert and all -

why did'nt he pony up for it ?? I mean , on his website I could see it listed @ $ 3999.00 .

Alot of the stuff he has is A.T'd -and he know's it !!!!!!!!!!
  • Thank you very much. I do my best to sell coins just like I buy coins. I hate it when a seller is misleading. I asked one guy if a Barber quarter had ever been cleaned or whizzed before I bid and he said confidently that it had not, but when it arrived I didn't have to use a loop or turn the coin over to tell that it had obviously been cleaned. Would I buy from him again? Definitely not. I asked another seller if the coin was naturally toned and he said that he thought it was, but it was questionable and didn't feel confident about sending it in to NGC or PCGS. I bought the coin anyways and would buy from him again. There's so many people out there that are just trying to make a quick buck, but you can only do that so many times with misrepresented coins before no one will pay any money for your coins anymore. I'd much rather miss out on a dollar today and make $5 tomorrow, but unfortunately there are people out there with a different mentality that are doing the hobby a great disservice.

As for Brandon...I had a few coins that I was wanting another opinion on and the 1949 Franklin was one of them. I wasn't trying to sell it to him. Check back in a month or so, and hopefully you'll see the Franklin half sitting in plastic. I would have to disagree with you though about his coins being AT. He has done his homework thoroughly and really does have an excellent eye for spotting AT coins. I've learned quite a few things from him on spotting things in a AT coin that the majority of collectors never would have recognized as being artificial. I had the pleasure of being there when he opened a box of coins that just came back from NGC, and ....WOW! I've never seen so many incredible coins at the same time in one place. There were more monster toned stunners there than I've seen in a day at some coin shows. He showed me some very nice AT coins that he had as references as what not to buy, but I've never seen him list anything that was AT.
