Anybody send in cards for review on the new .5 scale, and if so, how did you do?

image

I have my results finally back and was about 15%,
so, I am very curious as to how everyone has done.

Sorry, I should have been a little more specific.
I sent in 100 cards, 15 uprgraded.

    15 % is pretty good.

I think only Jasp has done better.

1 for 6 and have quickly realized the review service makes no financial sense for this small collector.

    My results:

Sent in 3 baseball cards, all graded PSA 8, one stayed the same, one got a 1/2 bump (62 Lou Brock rookie), the other ... a full bump.

A 1957 Ernie Banks which did not get a bump, had a small piece of paper, like a Post-It note attached to it, that read PD. A small amount of snow, or weak color must have held it back. I wondered if anyone else had a similar "note" attached to their cards when received.

Have a second sub with them now ... with 10 or so cards ... still waiting, it's been at least 5 weeks.

The submission was worth it from my end, but from what I've seen from other submitters, makes me wonder if I'll do it again. I've been collecting for over 22 years, so my "eye" is pretty good, and I'm honest with myself regarding the cards.

  • My best cards from my bumps were: (BOTH NOW POP 1/NOTHING HIGHER !)

    1965 OPC Kaline #130 PSA 8.5
    1971 OPC Kaline #180 PSA 8.5

There were a couple others that were good, but, of course
the two above are my FAVORITES!

They should be putting a sticker on every card that doesn't bump, telling you why it didn't bump. Every card I've ever sent in for review has come back that way. (except the two that actually bumped of course. image

27/103 with 4 full grade bumps
  • Hi,
    I hit 7 for 35 with 1 full grade bump (1@7.5, 5@8.5, 1@9); the '57 Ford 8.5 and Shantz 9 being the big prizes
Submitted some HOFers, mostly scarce series and low-pop commons I thought had a shot
Team cards seem to do well- all 3 got an upgrade!

    1 for 3.
1954 Red Heart Mantle PSA 8 to 8.5. It is nearly perfectly centered and very sharp with no print line on front.

  • Just got in today (April $12 CC special) 24 of 70 (34%) including 1 full grade bump.

Way too picky on pd imo. Print needs to be flawless and corners really nice to have a prayer.

I tend to do better with crack and resubs. i have on average gotten bumps of 4-5 full grades. 5's to 10's or 9's. So i can see how they can really grade well on a 0.5 scale. BTW these grades are from the same graders that are now on the 0.5 scale as well.

    Hello All,

I was wondering if one could send in reviews (1/2 grade reviews) under the $5 modern special that PSA is currenly running thru June 30th. I have approx 10 cards all under the $100 level.

    Thanks in advance

I'm curious to hear if the people who sent in PSA 8's for review (and received a 0.5 point bump) can tell why only certain cards received the bump while other 8's didn't. Does it seem that centering was really the differentiating factor?

When PSA first announced the opportunity to send in cards for review, they said,

<< <i>In general, the centering may be the most important factor in achieving the half-point increase with eye-appeal being so crucial in the grader evaluation. Since centering is so important and clearly visible to most collectors, the strength or weakness of the centering will have a significant impact on the final outcome. >>

I was talking to one collector who shared with me that, of the 8's he sent in, the only ones that received a 0.5 point bump were so close to perfection that a person would have thought the card deserved to be a straight 9. It didn't matter if the 8's centering was 55/45 or better if 1 or 2 of the corners showed the slightest bit of wear at 10x.

I've gotten 22/121 to bump...Every card that didn't bump came back with a little white sticker explaining why PSA didn't think the card was bump worthy.

In most cases, it was either a corner or a PD rather than centering that kept my cards from bumping. Though 99% of the time, I wouldn't even consider sending a card in for a bump unless the centering was at the high end of the scale for its grade.

If you think you have a PSA 8 card that is equal to or better than most PSA 9's you see, then it's probably worth a shot at submitting it. Otherwise, your chances are pretty slim (but not impossible).
