Goetz medal - original or copy?

I recently bought this Goetzie on Ebay for just $50. The seller failed to mention in the auction title that the medal was German and that it was a Goetz. Can anyone tell me if this is an original?

Weight is 75.4 gram
Diameter is approximately 54mm
Metal is iron

So - did I do well here or is there some other reason it was cheap?? image

  • This may be the English copy of the original Goetz medal. Am I right?

Thats the Lucitania medal, they are of that texture, and you can compare it to an original at Cachmans site. He is the goetz expert.

Definitely a copy. Lacks the fine details of an original - very mushy. See K156 on the site theboz11 linked to.

Also, on the original the month is MAI. On English copies the month is MAY

Yeah, I figured it was a copy. Anyone knows the approximate value of these?

Apart from that, Cacheman's site is amazing. Besides from the beauty of those medals his collection must be worth a fortune. Lucky man image

I like your bag. Are you related to the unknown comic by chance? image

British copy....you paid market for it if you got the box with it but it doesn't sound like you did otherwise you'd know it was a copy. Still fun to own though...image
  • The English Copy is as interesting as the original, used for propaganda purposes, exploiting a dating error on original to say the attack was planned on the civilian craft.

They made about 300,000 of them from steel IIRC, great piece of history.
