I would prefer to not take a loan against my 2008 Federal Tax Return, but as with most government ideas, I don't get the choice.

This isn't free money folks...it's just a loan against the money you'd be filing to get back early next year.

    Gumby,
True and True, my only saving grace of not getting the money, I won't have to claim what I don't get next year. But that is not set in stone...Last time this happened (First year of Bush), it never came back to haunt us as Income.

Nice having that Russell - I've read where he wouldn't even sign for his teammates, while he was a player anyway.

I am just finishing up reading his book Russell Rules, and he mentions in there where about half way through his career he stopped signing autographs because he felt it kept him from making meaningful contact with other people. He would rather look you in the eyes and make a connection, then have his head buried signing your item.

Of course he seems to be signing quite regularly for UD and Topps these days. I wonder if he had a change of heart or they just threw enough money his way.

I've got the book also Justin.

I would've liked to have gotten this signed myself - but had to settle for a hand-me-down from Hope.

It's the only thing I have with a Russell sig.

I remember when he did his first signing - in years - the ad was in SCD - years ago. SCD got a lot of negative mail on his signing for righteous bucks - at the time.

This is incorrect. It is not next year's money early. I know the rumor is out there, but it is not true. As for having to pay income tax on the stimulus money, I am not sure about that.

I stand corrected! (and happily, so!) From irs.gov:

What is it? It's an economic stimulus payment that more than 130 million households will receive starting in May. It's not taxable, and it won't reduce your 2007 or 2008 refund or increase the amount you owe when you file your 2008 return.

Looks like that answers both questions!

    Gumbyfan,

Thanks for the information. I learned something too. I also checked my bank account, and my check is already in. I can't believe it. I didn't file my taxes until April 15th.

They're depositing the money in order based on the last two digits of your SSN. They started depositing funds on the 28th for people who filed with direct deposit and had SSNs ending in 00...

  • My wife has a million things planned for her half of our check, but I really don't have anything definate in mind right now. I plan on gettin a 1998 Topps baseball set sometime this year, and maybe a 1983/1952 Topps reprint set, or maybe a couple of boxes of 2008 Heritage. Those are all ideas, nothing definite though.
    2001-2014 Topps Heritage complete!

Argh, I owed this year so I have to wait till June for a paper check - no direct deposit even though I paid them with direct deposit.

Also some good news: This refund is an early break of your 08 taxes, but they are estimating it from your 07 taxes. So if you made too much money in 07 to get the full refund (I did by a tad) and make less money in 08 (I know I will), you will get the difference next year after filing. And if you make too much this year, you get to keep the difference, you won't have to pay it back.

While this money is not taxable, someone, some day will have to pay for this.

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • I got my welfare check direct deposited.

Spent $60 of it on filling up my gas tank....so that money should go right back into Exxon Mobils bank account. alright!

Too bad we dont live in Iraq... gas is $1.30 a gallon. If only we had some way of getting that oil..........oh wait. oh forget it.

Is this true about getting it later if you owe. I had to pay $1,800 this year to fed and could use partial rebate. Thought because I paid from my bank account it would be direct deposited into my account???no? yes?

    From the IRS Web site:

"Q. Is my stimulus payment taxable?

    A. No. You will not owe tax on your payment when you file your 2008 federal income tax return. But you should keep a copy of the IRS letter you receive later this year listing the amount of your payment.

    Q. If my stimulus payment is not going to affect my 2008 tax refund or increase the tax I owe next year, why is it I need to retain the letter that lists how much I received?

    A. In the event you do not qualify for the full amount on your 2007 return but you do on your 2008 return, you will need to have the letter as a record of the amount you previously received. [New 4/11/08]

    Q. Will the payment I receive in 2008 reduce my 2008 refund or increase the amount I owe for 2008?

    A. No, the stimulus payment will not reduce your refund or increase the amount you owe when you file your 2008 return.

    Q. I don’t qualify for a stimulus payment based on my 2007 return. But my tax situation will be different in 2008. Will I qualify for any special benefit?

    A. Possibly. The 2008 tax instructions will include a worksheet to help those who did not qualify for a payment or those who received a reduced amount determine if they can obtain a benefit when they file their 2008 tax returns next year."
