Now That's One Beat Up 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle!

I've seen beat up Mantles before, but I think the one pictured below tops them all. Zero feedback notwithstanding, I think this might be a legit auction.

Sure looks to me like it was recently mutilated. To me it looks like a reprint.
  • it's used, that's all.....clothes pins and bicycle spokes....the guy must have been a serious cyclist!

    50/50 chance.

BUT, the surfaces do look a little wrong for the amount of damage.

Yes, that's what struck me right away at first glance, and to those like you and me who have handled and seen many, many, many thousands of 50's baseball cards, the first glance, IE the first inclination, is usually correct.

We'll see - this guy seems to portray himself as some "bigtime" type memorabilia seller, and he does have some very interesting stuff listed. Maybe some here know him - I'm not up to speed on every baseball memorabilia dealer in the US as some are here.

In any event, I wouldn't want a card looking like that even if it was genuine...just doesn't appeal to me...especially for whatever money it's going to sell for in that slab.

Yes, that's understandable, having done that as a kid. But normally when doing that, then that card is not going to be stored in any type of decent manner...and the damaged areas usually age with a certain appearance. Perhaps the card was "professionally" cleaned and bleached which is what is throwing me off a bit from looking at the scan. I wouldn't be surprised if the slab was cracked and the card removed, that this card would smell like Clorox. In any event...I'm not interested in bidding on the card anyway.

    Agreed.

IMO, someone pulled a fast one on BGS.

Perhaps it was folded a couple of times and then put in a washing machine.

Left side paper loss and top wear just looks too odd..
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

The looks to me like what is represented on the holder. No more, no less.

I'm confident it's the real deal, possibly soaked or cleaned to get a little fresher appearance. But really when a card is only 95% whole those other issues don't really bother me.

I think it is a real card.

  • Nice!!!!!!

I love when vintage cards are beat up, for some reason I like them when it shows some age.

  • Oh yeah, and its in a BVG holder which I wouldn't trust, so you never know if its real or fake.

you can tell its a fake by the left rip, the grey cardboard would not look so new and perfect, it would have aged (and more quickly) then a non ripped area...

You can see the difference in the aging between the two cards where the bad creases occur - the PSA card creases are like a dull white which is natural aging, versus the other card creases which are a bright white. Could be the "flash" from the camera made the first card appear brighter, but I still think the first card could be a reprint. With contemplation...I agree with Storm on the 50/50 thing being about right.

Ya, it has to be fake, BVG couldn't possibly see with card in hand, what we can see by the scan.

Boy, did they get duped. image
