How much is a run of 1960-2008 proof sets worth?

My grandfather bought a run of these quite some time ago from Coin Vault without my knowledge, and I know what he paid, so I'm hoping to find out from you all that he did not get completely shafted.

What could one reasonably expect to sell these for?

10% back of bid is a relative rate for most post-1950's proof sets (assuming they've been opened, sometimes unopened ones command more), so whatever that totals up to....though I have seen them bought and sold even lower than this....

ten back of bid is a little optimistic for some of the earlier 60's stuff...
  • How much would "bid" be on this lot?

This is really not that easy a question to answer unless you let us know whether the sets are silver or not.
For example, from 1992 to now, the sets were issued in clad and in silver. Does he have clad, silver or both? As you might imagine, there is a big difference in price.

My guess is that Coin Vault opted for the cheaper clad sets.....

If you PM me, I would be happy to add up the bid prices from my latest Greysheet to give you a ballpark.

This set from 1959-2007 sold for about $700. I am going to guess he paid over $1000 from coin vault. Scammers

Was likely a $1499 special image

  • He paid $1199 for them. $700, wow. I wasn't expecting them to cost that little.

Did your grandfather get the SMS sets too? Or just the proofs sets?

If you were to sell, I'd expect about 15-20% back of bid (from a B&M).

Seems like that sort of cut would put the earlier 60s silver sets at or below melt?? Are these early proof sets really just "junk silver?"

  • I believe he did get the 76 3-coin set, but everyting else was run-of-the-mill. Normal proof sets for every year. 1960-64 were silver, and they did include the SMS sets for 1965, 66, and 67. So it's a complete run from 60-08.

My advice - before you take 30 back of bid on your '61-'64 proof sets, cut them up, sell the dime/qtr/half for melt, and spend the nickel and penny, as you'll come out ahead .image

Someone is offering me 1958-2002 mint proof sets unopened for $800. Is that a good deal?

Separate question: Redbook lists 1958 Uncirculated mint sets with a P-D. Does this mean 5 coins with P mint plus 5 coins with D mint totaling 10 coins with a value of $185 (page 327 - 2008 redbook)?
  • jnd1955jnd1955 Posts: 939
that would be a missprint. the 09 book show them at 65.00 and grayshhet is at 43.00
and the 59 set is at 24.00
the rest of your list is posted above
