Another grade the nickel thread

The Jefferson series is one that I'm not too good at grading. Other than the steps, what are the things that you look for that tell you that the coin that you're looking at is a keeper? What does this 1961 coin grade?

    Is that carpet hair near the I of IN on the obverse or a scratch? I will guess carpet.
    The dings on the reverse are a little distracting, maybe 63?

    Nice nickel I'll go MS64 maybe 65 some of the hits on the reverse will knock it a point. image

    My guess based on the pics is a MS63 due to the excessive bag dings and the lack of luster. I think with enough rum and bourbon, maybe a MS64. Tomorow it'll be a 62 but at least I won't need to chew my arm off. image

    I suspect it looks far better in hand than the picture.

    The planchet scratching and marks will keep it from very high grade but it's a nice specimen. The date isn't extremely difficult to find nice but gemmy ones are a little tougher.
