what just happened???????

I just checked some auctions that I am the highest bidder on and they went down in price. 3 auctions I put bids on and 3 more that I am watching all went down in price. The 3 that I bid on I out bid somebody (don't know if it was the same person or not). So what happened? Did somebody retract a bid or what? Wouldn't ebay let me know what happened since I am the highest bidder? Any help is much appriecated.
