Less than a week ago a George Witt in PSA 7 went for $41.00. According to VCP last November Goodwin Auctions had a George Witt in PSA 8 that went for a mere $3614.00!!! Crazy prices
I'm not the sharpest cat on the graded card block, so I got to imagine that someone else has thought about purchasing, 100 raw "really nice" looking low pop 1962 common and submitting them and if just one of them came back a PSA 8 and ... (You get the idea). And if it came back a PSA 9 ...

P.S. That or being a true gambler and purchasing a 1962 Topps Pack for $700.00 and $800.00, respectively from the Baseball Card Exchange:
Most of the Witt cards you find are nowhere near 8's. If you find one centered and with decent corners it almost invariably is covered with snow. Same for the Landrum, Foytack, and to a lesser extent the Albie Pearson. There are a number of cards in the set that 7's are fairly tough.

Nobody would like to bust those 62 Topps packs more than me, but I decided against buying these packs from BBCE for a variety of reasons. One main reason is I want to see the track record of PSA with regards to authenticating unopened vintage packs before I buy one, bust it, and possibly get ticked off that it was resealed.
The funny thing about this registry competiton there is like 10 guys in the hobby that are impressed with that sale because only an 8 or better is good enough for them, the rest of us probably could live with a 7.
Currently completing the following registry sets: Cardinal HOF's, 1961 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1972 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1980 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, Bill Mazeroski Master & Basic Sets, Roberto Clemente Master & Basic Sets, Willie Stargell Master & Basic Sets and Terry Bradshaw Basic Set
1000% real sale. The winner is obviously very obsessed with brown borders as he bids on 7s, 8s, and 9s and wins a SH%$load of them. He won all 3 of the #598 Hickman (last card of set) PSA 8s that were offered on ebay last year. He buys multiple copies of the same card regularly. If you bid on a #39 Joe Koppe in a PSA slab you will see what I mean (he even won one of mine raw). He is not on the PSA registry currently. The underbidder is crabcake55, #2 on the 1962 T Basic Set registry.
I've already decided I can live with fives (key cards only, not the whole set) if I ever get up to doing 1960s sets. It's the only way it could be at least half way affordable for our price range.
I still can't figure this one out for over $3,000 which should be about a $20 card or a bit more. Perhaps it's just two rich trial lawyers whereby money is no object to them, bidding against each other...he'll just add some money to their latest insurance company extortion lawsuit to pay for the card.

Very ugly looking 8, and one guy here said that its a $20 card??? That has to be a fake sale, if not, i'm quitting the hobby
Giovanni
You can double your money, and he can prove his point.
Heck give him 50.00 and I'll give you 100.00
We all come out winners.

BTW - I was NOT judging the buyer of the card - heck - I would imagine they could afford the card way better than myself.
I am more amazed at what the Registry has created and how it incites people to go after those elusive gems.
Congratulations to the winner.
I wonder if Davilillo needed it?

I know I could, especially a hi end one.
