Good question. Could it have had something to do with the rise in the price of silver back then? That was when they pulled the 1906-S pesos back and they didn't make any proofs in 1907. In 1908, of course, the silver coins were smaller sized and made from 75% instead of 90% silver.

Another question: Why did they stop making pesos in 1912?
