Check out this early Dan Marino Patch I picked up

Ok first let me say I am very good at detecting fake patch cards. I cannot find any sign that this card has been tampered with. I think I am going to send it to Beckett to have it slabbed authentic. The guy has had this card for a long time and it is from 1999 when they did not make specific sets for patches. Beckett lists a multiplier for multi color swatches in the price guide for this set. Anyways check it out, I think it is pretty nice.

I agree. I thought it is odd that the seller states all cards are 1 of 1, but does not show a single backside.

I think it's odd that the seller is legitimately tring to get a quarter of a million dollars for that set.

I guess I will have to send this card to BGS before I list it anywhere. Like I said, there is no way they got the patch in through the front of the card and you can tell it extends to well under the edge. None of the edges show any sign of the card being split. There is no mention of any 1/1 version on Beckett online or Beckett.

Cards numbered of 300 don't get patches like that. I have serious doubt that the card is real. Beckett may pass it on as real, but how
do they really know? The sad part is that even if the patch was real, there would always be doubts because more times than not a
    card like that is fake.

    Good Luck

It is from 1999 and prior to that most jersey/patch cards were not numbered to low print runs like today. If you read my post they list a multiplier for multi colored patches. Many of the Jordan 1997-98 UD Jerseys are multicolor but they did not call them patch cards. If someone did fake the patch in this card it is the best fake I have ever seen.

As to your question of how does Beckett know if it is real? To fake a patch card, most are taken apart. Graders can spot when an entire card has been cut in half. They know the same way if PSA knows a card is fake, trimmed, altered, recolored, etc.

Most of those early game used Leaf sets seemed to have pretty amazing patches in them across the board.

That being said, the bottom right corner of the patch is a little suspect. Fibers shouldn't be coming over the edge of the card stock.

In my experience, most fake patches are removed from the window, then reinserted through the window, most often leaving fibers hanging out. If that is a reinserted patch, the bottom right corn was the last piece to be put in, as it appears much more loose in the frame.

I don't know if you're joking, but this looks like a fake. The card is from 1999, but the patch is the "NFL Equipment" patch used on the new(er) Reebok jerseys. Reebok started being sole supplier of jersey's in mid-00's (and subsequently ruining any aesthetic value to jerseys based on the insane desire to get its stamp on everything, but that's another thread). In the picture it looks like Marino is wearing a Starter jersey.

Just got this out of a set a couple of hours ago. Don't know anything about this kind of stuff though.

  • I have no clue how they got that fake patch in there but they did! image

Just kidding, I hope it does come back authentic because that would be a sweet card to have.

I will say its fake because of all the pacth stories I have heard in the past, but I hope you prove me wrong when it comes back from BGS. The older cards have been known to be fakes because they never did logo patches back then or something like that I read a while back.

    Just giving my opinion.

How do you take a plain 'ole jersey card and turn it up a notch? Why you add a piece of patch, of course. The idea is simple enough but what the card manufacturers didn't plan on is someone outside of the card factory walls adding a piece of patch. A growing problem in the hobby is the tampering of patch cards. Unscrupulous individuals have taken a regular jersey card and replaced the jersey swatch with a store model patch. One of the lowest feelings you can get is getting your patch card returned ungraded because the patch swatch is questionable.

A popular fake patch is the league logo patch. Adding an MLB, NFL or NBA logo to a jersey card can mean a big increase in bucks. Another "patch" commonly found on tampered cards is the jersey tag.

How can this problem be stopped? The card manufacturers do mark many of the real patch cards with "patch card" or "prime jersey" but this doesn't stop the fraud. One option is to offer an image of the patch that was cut up on the back of the patch card. Donruss did something similar to this showing an image of the item that was cut for swatches. This would be one step in the prevention of patch fraud.

Here is an idea I propose. Why can't the card manufacturers offer an on-line image database of each patch card? Sound like a far-fetched idea? It is already being done in the non-sport card market. Some of the non-sport manufacturers offer an image database of every sketch card offered in a particular card set. An example is the 2005 Inkworks Family Guy Season 1card set. Inkworks has an image of every sketch card that was inserted into packs. That's an image of all 6,340 sketch cards! Why is this important for sketch cards? Like patch cards, sketch cards can be victims of fraud as well. From adding color to a sketch card to commissioned after-market sketch cards that never saw the inside of a pack, an image of an actual pack inserted sketch card can be important when buying or selling. Each sketch card is a 1/1 piece of art. Like patch cards, certain aspects can make some sketch cards worth hundreds of dollars. With patches, multi colors and unusual pieces can increase value.

Will this solve the problem? Not completely. Remember, people still figure out how to counterfeit U.S. currency. What this can do though is limit the probability of fraud and instill some level of security. A little peace of mind goes a long way.

Yes, it would be extra effort and planning for the card manufacturers in order to set something like this up. When the manufacturers take the time to show they are committed to trying to protect their customers, not only does the hobby benefit but so too does the card manufacturer. Instilling trust in your customer is important and when the hobby benefits and stays healthy, we all benefit. Collectors have a fun hobby. Dealers have good business from happy collectors and I get to keep a job.

Like I said before, I hope its real, but I really don't think it is.

You might want to check with BGS to see how they define "Authentic". Someone once told me that the authentic label has nothing to do with the game used swatch and only certifies the card being legit.

yeah bottom right gives it away. Threads would not be coming over the border, they would be behind it.

Right about now is when Allen asks for advice on how to deal with the guy who sold him the card - but doesn't tell us the name, give any info on the auction, and ignores all questions directed his way.

The NFL Equipment logo wasn't used until the 2002 season.

Here is a pic from Marino's last season, notice the old style of NFL logo.

Also is that a crease in the bottom left corner of the patch?

LOL! I didn't even notice the original date!

Why was it brought back up???

If you look at the bottom left, top right, and bottom right, you can clearly see the window of where the "patch" is has been compromised.

To answer a question above, not really sure how this thread was resurrected T from the grave.

I've learned a lot more than when I posted my comments back in teh day. As mentioned they did not go to the "NFL Equipment" logo patches until the 2002 season.
