Matte Proof Lincoln's for the week of 4-24

WaterSportWaterSport Posts: 6,709 ✭✭✭✭✭
As usual, once the auctions are over, the PCGS price guide lights up. While the MS 68 1914 deserves recognition, so does the generic 1912 in 64 R&B. It shows a $1200 increase (more than double) over its former value of $760. It just goes to point out that MPL’s are one coin that can and does double in value.

As always, if you know of one that is sold on the list or becomes available, just PM me so I can keep the list as accurate as possible. Till next week.

We're all aware of how the MPL's have increased in value over the past three to four years. For fun I found an old PCGS price sheet from July 8, 2004 and compared prices on my MPL collection then versus now. Lots of FUN.

    .......................................THEN........................................NOW

    1909VDB PR61RB..........$1,000*...................................$3,500
    1909.......PR64RB...............325..........................................925
    1910.......PR65RB...............675........................................2,250
    1911.......PR64RB...............325...........................................875
    1912.......PR64RB...............325........................................2,000
    1913.......PR64RD...............575........................................1,100
    1914.......PR64RB...............325........................................1,300
    1915.......PR63RB...............250...........................................550
    1916.......PR64RB...............500.........................................3,500

    TOTALS..........................$4,300....................................$16,000

    * In 2004, PCGS showed the 1909VDB RB valued at $585 in PR60 & $1,500 in PR63

The only comparable date/color designation on Bob's list this week is Brian's 1910 PR65RB which he lists at $3,750. No sign of MPL prices going down.

Going back to my first coin book, the 'Coin Collectors Handbook' from 1960 (very artfully decorated by six year old me with my Flintstones rubber stamps, here are those prices

    1909 VDB $50 As point of reference, 1909 S VDB unc $85
    1909 15
    1910 13.50
    1911 17.50
    1912 13.50
    1913 14
    1914 20
    1915 27.50
    1916 30

My dogeared, coverless 1968 Redbook lists the following prices

    1909 VDB $350 1909 SVDB unc $240
    1909 85
    1910 85
    1911 85
    1912 95
    1913 95
    1914 185
    1915 275
    1916 300

Of course all these prices are relative since the original issue price was just a few cents each. I'll tell you, if I were a collector back in the day, Heck, I would have ordered an even thousand of these each year. It would set you back less than twenty bucks, and you'd have almost all the mints production for most years

I remember in 2002 & 2003, there wasn't as many MPLs to be found in a year as whats in this weeks list.

I knew i should have started buying these with my weekly allowance back in 1970. image I do wish i had started in coins before 2003. I spent 5 years and a 100k on racing ATV's. Nothing to show (except on x-rays). That 100k would have looked nice in coins. I am making up for lost ground now in a hurry.image

What I find the most comical about this is the PCGS price guide of high grade BN coins. For instance a 1912 in 66BN is listed at $1350, while a 64RB is $2000. There are only 20 coins graded 66 in any color designation, but 99 in 64RB alone. There is ABSOLUTELY NO comparison of a 66BN to a 64RB. These coins are light years apart in eye appeal and technical grade. If a 64RB is worth $2000, then a 66BN should be $15,000+.
