-- What would it take (in terms of wear, damage, etc) for a coin of this quality (MS 61) . . . to look like a coin of this quality? --
I don't know. All I know is that it looks intentional to me. And I say that because of the contrast between the numbers & letters and the fields. For example, look how bold and clean the 22 is compared to the fields, and the smoothness of the fields immediately surrounding some of the numbers & letters also looks unnatural to me. In your earlier post, you suggested that the coin has been tooled, and that jibes with what I see as a possibility. If I had to make a WAG, I'd say that the numbers & letters were tooled to increase the relief and the fields distressed to make the work less obvious. Edited to add: I've never seen anything like it.
And if I can guess the true grade on Andy's MS-61, I'll say EF-45.

This is definitely a tricky contest, since not only do you have to guess the TPG service, but based on your guess and knowledge of the grading principles of that particular series at that particular TPG you'd inflate/deflate the grade, accordingly. Cool contest, Regulated!

AU-50? You are talking about the $2-1/2, aren't you? Not that piece of trash that must have been stuck to the bottom of the shoe of somebody walking down a gravel road???????

ha. i always thought it was the norm for the TPGs to be uber lenient on these pieces and i thought people would take that into account when guessing the grade. it was really marked up but had very little wear in my opinion.
I remember when AU meant About Uncirculated or Almost Uncirculated and the coin at least had a passing resemblance to an uncirculated coin.

CaptHenway - You'll probably win a job offer from a hotel coin buying operation.
Seriously, I think the PCGS 61 might be accurately graded, and is at least a real 58. The PCGS AU50 is not something I would feel comfortable selling at that grade.

Silly me, I was using the pre-1986 grading standards.....

I didn't even see this until now. Although I'm disappointed, I lost fair and square ( unless 2K has some kind of crazy time machine ). Very interesting result though.

I figured it would be some rediculously high grade, otherwise Regulated wouldn't share it. I'm glad it wasn't graded SP-62 or something like that.
