To go "vintage" or not

I have a bit of a quandry, and since I do some lurking here I thought I would ask for opinions.

My personal goal is to complete every Topps set back to the year of my birth (1962) Right now I am almost done with 1965 and will be starting on one of the missing three (1962, 1963 or 1964)

Here's my question...my wandering eye has started going towards the 1941 Play Ball set. I like the design and it's a pretty small set with lots of challange and (of course) to "biggies" Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams. In the condition I am looking at the two sets are not that far apart in price (relatively speaking)

So here's my question....should I stray from my stated goal and go after the vintage set, or stay on target and start the 1964 set?

I would give it some SERIOUS thought, you dont want to jump start the 64 set and get half way through it and decide you wished you went with the playball set!

Best of luck and have a blast whichever way you chose!

I am not a good person to answer this question since I find it difficult to focus on just one set. Heck, when things get slow for a few days on the numerous, low completion percentage sets I am working on I start thinking about another project. Still, given that you have made it so far with the sets, 1965 to 2008, I think it would be a shame to leave that project incomplete. Of course you can always jump on that classic Play Ball set and work on your 1962 to 1964 run in between or afterwards. By the way, are any of these sets (or singles) graded or did you do them all raw?

  • Every single one of them is raw. I have them all in 3" binders with a Hall of Famer card on the outside for identification. It has been a fun ride to say the least. I get them in what would generally fall into the 6-8 graded range for the older sets. 7-9 for anything newer than 1980.

I tend to be a bargain hunter so sometimes getting sets completed can be a slow process (I didn't think I'd ever finish the 1966 set. Damn you Choo Choo Coleman!)

What I usually try and do is complete the set in series (i.e. finish series one before moving on to series two, etc.) I just finished the fifth series of the 1965 set.

Plan your work, AND work your plan.

I would do the 60s, AND buy just the keys from the 1941 group.

If you started the 1941 Play Ball set would you lower that expectation, or try for it in "mid to upper" grade?

In regards to the 41 Playball set the Williams is an easy find. The tough ones in my opinion would be the DiMaggio, Reese, Camilli and Dickey. It is a set that has almost two different looks, you can find high grade cards that look like faded and have toned borders but still fit the holders they are in OR there are the colorful beauties that most people would take IMO in lower grade simply based on the eye appeal which to me is what that set is all about. I have put it together several times and it is sometimes amazing to see the difference, much more so than any other set I know of that has ever been produced from TOPPS. I know the 1940 Playball set is the same way although it is not in color. There is nothing better in the hobby to me than a real clean bright white bordered, colorfull 1941 Playball card. I can promise you those are hard to find.

Finish your goal. Distractions are easy & numerous. Discipline is hard and rare. After putting your stated goal to bed, treat yourself to a splurge.
