Fake patches gone Wild

This has to be addressed by the card makers, maybe the high end cards should come encapsulated and sealed.
Seems that every day now there is a new fake patch seller trying to turn a $200 card into a $3000 card
fake patch and auction, (has been ended, probably because of the thread on Beckett)

How does someone do this without destroying the card??

My dumb question of the day...

Why would someone want to destroy a valuable card just to trade out the real patch for a fake one?

    From his own description
CARD HAVE LITTLE FLAWS ON CORNERS AND EDGES BUT STILL AN AWESOME CARD

look around the window, you can see the new damage as opposed to the original
maybe the patches should be glued, or a hologram plastic film placed over the window that breaks away when removed.

Same question here. What would having a different patch make it presumably more valuable than the original?

I guess because it has more colors to it, it is worth more??

I can see the missing gray around where the patch is at, but still unclear how one would remove just the patch with out the top layer(s) of the card apart. Does not part of the patch lay underneath the card??
  • I am not particually into patch cards, but guys like that really take a lot of joy out of the hobby.

My question then is, what do you do with the real patch that you've removed???
  • This sort of thing makes me sick. image

I wish there was something that could be done about these fools. If the card companies kept a photo of every patch card that you could access online, you could check on things like this. It wouldn't be tough to do technologically, but there is nothing in it for them, so why would they go to the expense?

Looks like it suffered some slight damage this time, but some of the fake patch making experts seem to be able to pull it off with no damage.

It's a sad part of our hobby, that should be addressed by the card companies. Maybe all patch cards be produced with the patch under a clear piece of laminent, sealed inside the card? That way, if this was to be pulled, cut, or pried out to switch patches, it would be very obvious.

I see a few sellers on eBay that just have too many multicolored or logo patch cards to possibly be legit in my opinion. I think with the ultra high end products featuring patches rejuvenating this segment of the hobby and demanding some serious coin in many instances, this issue has become more pervasive. I am not a big game-used card collector, but it has actually gotten to the point that I avoid "premium" patches out of concern they are altered. I will take a safer and cheaper single color patch any day.

If you have $3,000 to drop on some modern patch card then you are as crazy as the person making the fake patch card.

Side note I do not condone fraud but come on 3 grand for a patch card and an auto!

  • Im confused, why pull a patch out of a real card? Are you saying they are making a reprint and adding their own new patch? Why would someone want to change the patch?

for some reason people will pay more if there is logo showing in the patch or the patch has a lot of color work in it. Take a look a the two cards posted one for sure looks better.

I multi-colored patch will bring a premium. A patch that contains a logo will bring a premium over that.

Depending on the player, something like this.

    1 Color: 1x
    2 Color: 1.2x
    3+ Color: 1.5x
    Logo: 1.75 - 2x

Here's a good example on Adrian Peterson's SP Authentic Jersey / Auto Card:

    Single Color - $510
    3 Color - $625
    Logo - $700

Sorry for the post, post post, but I wanted to make a point as I buy these type of cards quite a bit.

It's an eye appeal thing. A multi-colored patch, just looks better in my, and most buyer's, opinion. That means there are more people bidding on these type of cards, and now you're getting into a macro economics, supply / demand type situation.

  • I did notice on the Exquisite Manning Patch I pulled the piece was set way back in the card and had part of the card over it. It would be very hard to pull that piece out without tearing up the card.
