Muera Huerta peso

I was looking through the Millennia sale and Lot 1141 is one of several that caught my eye. I'm new to the Darkside and would appreciate any opinions about

1. The hammer price. I know the estimates are low and the estimate is 700-800.
2. How difficult is it to find a nice circulated example and how much would that cost?

Thanks.

The Muera Huerta peso is discussed along with several other Latin American classics in Kenneth Bressett's Milestone Coins: A Pageant of the World's Most Significant and Popular Money. (That link goes to an excerpt on the Maximilian peso.)

It's also featured in Money of the World: Coins That Made History.

You might have to search a bit, but they're not super scarce and you can find them. Over the past few years, I've bought 4 of them grading VF to XF for $175-$275.

I needed a little help from the Goldberg website to know what it looks like.

That looks like a very nice strike for the issue. If the grade in hand is AU+ then the lot will easily sell for the estimate and probably a bit more.

  • I should have given the grade. I can't get into their site at the moment but I believe it was NGC MS-64. Most of the coins are mint state and highest known grade but a nice circulated example of them would be good enough for me.

A nice UNC I would imagine should bring $1500+ Nice coin. Very much above average.

I'm surprised. How long did this issue circulate before the order was issued outlawing the possession of these coins? (The penalty was death!) I can't imagine the coins circulating much after that.

You wouldn't think so, but the ones I've bought do not appear to be in as good a condition as the piece pictured above. I suppose there's always the possibility they're in better condition than I noted, but not particularly well struck- it's not as if the revolutionary issues are known for their quality workmanship... image

    Very cool coin.

It looks weakly struck in the middle which gives it that AU look from the start.

I also liked the other variety of the Muera Huerta but that is in another price plateau.

Dentuck, thanks for the information on the books, very good resources.

I tend to agree with CIVITAS that it will likely exceed the estimate provided that the surfaces are okay...
