68 Down--1959 Topps Baseball Completed in PSA 8 or Better

With the purchase of the tough Billy Pierce AS card(#572), I have knocked off my 68th set with every card PSA 8 or better--1959 Topps.
This set was tough with the last 7-8 cards all tough and expensive--especially the Pierce AS. My good fortune came when well known dealer Brian Drent of Mile High Cards said he was willing to hold it off ebay to sell it to me. He then knocked several hundred dollars off the price when I made a commitment to direct more business his way in the future. Thanks Brian--this will be great for both of us.
The completion of this set also extends my run of completed Topps sets in PSA 8 and better to a decade(1959-68). I am missing one card for 1958(#256-White Sox Team) which if I could get would extend my run to 13 years as I have both 1956 and 1957 complete in PSA 8 or better.
This set is 572 PSA 8s. Among the toughest 8s to obtain were Billy Hunter(11), Del Rice(104), Lee Walls(105), Ruben Amaro(178), Bobby Shantz(222), Billy O'Dell(250), RC Stevens(282), and Andy Carey. This puts me into a tie for 10th in The PSA Set Registry. I will let the set rest at this level.
The goal remains 100 vintage or semi-vintage sets in PSA 8 or better. As I posted recently, over 30 are down to 7 cards or less. I appreciate all the help I can get from fellow collectors.
Completed sets in PSA 8 or better are as follows:

You disgust me in a completely jealous and envious sort of way.
Awesome stuff, though. Very, very impressive.
Now, if only I could get PSA to say OK, I might be able to knock out my first completed registry set. I just need them to add Alvaro Espinoza and then I'll need to get the 4-5 cards he has graded. Heck, I'll even have to track down more than just his 1987 Topps RC!

I am a forgiving sort. Any issues I had with Brian Drent are less than many others I have forgiven for past transgressions. As I remember, Brian was among the dealers that I asked to explain certain policies of theirs on Net 54(like have they ever altered cards) and who did not respond. I understand although I wish he would have. I appreciate Brian holding Pierce off Ebay and giving me a good break on the price and will find a way to return the favor. Also, I have never stopped buying from Brian since that time.
WarHound,
Definately not one year and probably not two years--perhaps by the end of 2010. Patience is also required. Also, I have a budget.
Jim
Congrats, especially on nabbing the Pierce which is one of the toughest Topps cards to obtain in high grade.

Truely remarkable! You're clearly one of the more dedicated collectors out there! Find job!
Best of luck and continued success in your unrivaled quest.

Very cool.
Any word on you Milk Dud submission?

"Another 100?" At least--provided I live that long.
Wondo,
Should know soon--what do you think--they looked good to me--is PSA tough on these?

My experience is that they are tough because the cardboard used is easily "dented" or bent. Also, the natural box edge bends promote the dreaded spider creasing. Nevertheless, there are a number of tens out there as well as a bunch of high grade samples. If you got a pristine set from Alan from a "find" you should do pretty well. Good luck!
But finally...I see a glimmer of hope!
If your '69 set comes back, and you need a card or two, I might be able to be "the man!" I have an awfully nice set of those critters, including a gorgeous Yaz (ugly Brock, though...)...so, you never know!
Anyway, all my continued best to you, Jim...it's almost as much fun watching you progress as it is collecting my own stuff!
Nick
Thanks--will let you know as soon as I get them back.
Nick,
I will need a lot of 69s in the beginning. Off the top of my head I would say that one-third of my 69s were off center and I did not submit.
I would buy 8s or 9s--either one.
Glad you enjoy the chase--each set has its own story.
Jim
I have only two sets registered and they drive me crazy... sometimes I wonder why I even do it.
May seem so but not really--I have guys trying to help scout down the cards I need. It used to be busier when I was trying to buuild some of the 6-700 card sets in 8 or better but even then I had help.
