HELP! I found a weird, half-dollar sized worn copper today! What is it?

I usually hang out in the US coins forum, but I need your help!

I found this coin today in a bag of halves....any idea on what it could be? I know it's a long shot, because it's REALLY worn, but I figured I'd give it a try!

Here are the pictures...

Thanks!

Looks like a silhouette from Horton Hears a Who.

    Actually it's probably a cornucopia.

Turn the bottom image 90 degrees to the left. It looks like a worn token commemorating the Roving Gnome.

This might be like a Rorschach test, but I think I see the outline of a star on the other side (similar to that seen on some Chilean coins). The cornucopia is also seen on some Latin American issues.

I don't know what it is, but my guess is that it is of Latin American origin, possibly Chile or Peru, some time in the 19th century.

Be that as it may, the Horton Theory cannot be completely discounted.

I took my 4 year old son to see that movie. We both enjoyed it and I'm a 63 year old geezer.
It does kinda look like Horton.

  • Hi Paul,
Did some research on this and-
I agree with Lynch that it is most likely Chilean or Peruvian in origin. I did also find that there are Israeli coins with Cornucopia's on them also, so I would not rule that possibility out...
    Hope this helps,
    Jim

I don't think it is Israeli. Most likely an Israeli coin wouldn't be that worn. Whatever it is, it is intersting.

Were I on a server that accepted Photobucket, I'd have enjoyed seeing this one. I do enjoy a mystery sometimes. image

  • wow, you found that in a bag of kennedy halves?? i looked at some 19th century peruvian and chilean coin plates in Krause, and while the design elements are somewhat in the ballpark, i didn't see anything that matched that big cornicopea (sp?) design i see on your piece.
I also can't tell from your pic if the piece is brass, copper or silver-- can you tell? Knowing what metal it is would definitely help. I also agree about it probably not being israeli. It looks like that might be a person's neck i see on the obverse (like on a bust), but not sure. REALLY good mystery, this one!

It looks like it is made of brass.
