<< <i>Tell him that you've always thought that you and he could be good friends should hang out, then ask for his cell number. Also ask how his kids are doing and mention them by name. >>
Vida Blue once gave me his business card, and wrote his home phone number and cell on it. I had met him at a bar and chatted for a bit. I didn't want to weird out him or his wife, so I never called.
For all of you who gave me advise on stalking not to worry I have cleared his security screening a few years ago.
Here is a picture from today
<< <i>Was Carter signing any non-book items? >>
No -- the B&N staff was very strict on that front but when people asked to personalize the book he had no problem doing that (the B&N staff did not like that)

That looks like Jim Kelly.
Glad you had a great experience.

I've always had pretty good luck getting booksigners to sign things other than their books, even when the flyers and staff would state they could not do that. Most of my booksigners though, have been politicians so they rely on public image/appeal/relations. Jimmy Carter on several occasions, Newt Gingrich, Giuliani, etc., the key is to not have it showing when you approach, and to pull it out in front of them from a pocket or jacket and ask them straight up to sign it. You do want to be careful though to not pull it out in a way that startles the Secret Service if they are a President or Speaker of the House or something like that.
The only time I've ever tried to get extra items signed and got turned down was by Monica Lewinsky and she would have done it but her "handlers" "publisher" or whomever, sternly told her no. I had a Presidential Seal cigar in my pocket and I asked her permission first to make sure it wouldn't embarrass her if I pulled it out to have her sign it, and she laughed and said OK. I then handed her a $100.00 bill for her trouble and the cigar and she smiled and laughed and was going to sign it, but the people beside her said "No Monica" and grabbed her arm. She handed me back my $100.00 and cigar and apologized and said she couldn't do it. At that time, if I had been able to get that cigar signed, that would have been an easy 4 or 5 figure piece in a major auction. She was very personable and clowning around or I wouldn't have asked her in the first place.

<< <i>Great story...Carter sounds like a great guy,maybe that's why the surlier players disliked him! >>
you are so right and that is what's nuts -- all through his career he was know as a camera hog and a phoney and yes even though he was in front of camera a lot he walked the talk ~~~ he is as nice as he comes across and is willing to give anyone a moment of his time.
another story from Thursday --- there were these 2 kids (aged around 16-17 and they are the kids in the photo of me posted above) taking a looooong lunch period and I gathered they were there getting the auto for someone else. They were acting like kids do joking on the slowness of the line, freaking out when a superfan guy pulls 10 books out of a bag to get signed etc... but when it came their turn Gary took some time to joke with them, comment on the "nice" black label shirt one was wearing and when he found out that one was a catcher on his high school team he gave the kid one of those knuckle to knuckle handshakes -- it was as if those 2 kids were the only ones in the building and watching them walk away with HUGE smiles and even though they might have came there for someone else they took away an amazing memory that will be with them forever and will be shared to whom ever will listen. Gary is that good in person.
<< <i>I have been to several Carter signings and he always goes out of his way to engage the person he is signing for --- today I over heard a guy on line wondering what his world series ring would look like and when it was this guys turn he was talking to Gary about the ring, small talk stuff, and came right out and asked if he could put it on. Without missing a beat Gary took it off and handed it to him to try on ~~ the guy's chin hit the ground. I really enjoy watching other people meet him for the first time they can't believe that he is nice as he is. >>
Now that's a true class act.
