OT: I'm done for a while...

The title says it all, I'm going to take a break from the hobby for a bit. I know that I just got up to speed and everything, but a few things have happened lately that have forced me to make this decision. I'm getting to the home stretch of my high school career, the surf shop I used to work at was recently forced to close, and the main thing is that I just don't have the money for it right now. I'm still going to post frequently but my contribution to the mail call thread will basically cease until I can hook up with another surf shop or feel like coming back to spending money on cardboard. Sorry if some of you guys don't like this type of OT stuff, but get over it.

Must be nice to be so young!!image I think that a break every so often for either financial or even sanity reasons is a good idea. Does not mean you still can contribute to the boards though!!

So you're basically telling us you're a broke as a joke teenager.

No worries man. That's how it's supposed to be.

Won't be the first time in your life the extra moolah just aint around. You seem very mature for your age and appear to have a very good grasp on things. Hang around and don't get bugged out because you can't add to your collection for a bit. Learn some, teach some, and you'll be fine.

    I've enjoyed your posts Goot.

Ya don't have to worry about any criticism - heck - yes - we've endured some really strange stuff over the months.

Good luck finding a new job and getting back to buying - heck - you're in high school - there's plenty of people with career jobs and scale back due to economics or just plane ole overbuying.

I can't believe what gas has climbed to.

BTW - it seems that TBS shows less Braves games than they used to - or is just me?

    Don't be a stranger.

Goot you are a nice young man. Its not easy being a teenager and life can throw you some curve balls. You have done well in this hobby thus far and be proud of what you done in such a early age. Nonthing wrong with taking a break.

Just to make you feel better, I sold almost all of my cards after high school because I needed the money. Then I started collecting again after I got a job in my sophmore year in college, and then I sold all my cards again because I was broke again. When it comes down to it, it's just a hobby and a luxury, so you do it when you can afford to and have the time.

plenty of good collector years ahead of you Goot! All of us took "breaks" from buying throughout the years. Collecting cards is more of a marathon than a sprint.

Collecting isn't just buying...its enjoying the cards and B.S.ing about it with other collectors....you could even trade on the boards. Just becasue your not on the mound pitching, doesn't mean your off the team. Everyone's got to sit every once in a while.

I sold all my cards in high school to pay for surfboards and cameras and cars, best business decision I ever made. Have some fun, the cards will always be there.

  • Thanks a lot for the kind words guys. I guess it's just somethin that happens to everyone at some point. I'll definitely still be hangin around the boards so don't worry Bigfische, I won't leave ya hangin in the Braves thread.

All that buying and then selling doesn't sound too fun Lee. I guess I'm lucky since I don't really have any major bills to pay yet. That way I'm able to hang on to all of the cards that I've already accumulated rather than selling them in desperation for cash.
  • Goot, I've been there many years ago. I collected from the time I was 4 years old, until I was 17, and then I found different interests and left the hobby until I was 19. Then, at 19, I came back to cards again, and have been going strong ever since. I think it's probably something alot of us have experienced at one time or another in life. Good luck with your future ventures.
  • Goot, don't wait for that surf board shop, work at Mcdonald's if you have to, but just get that new job so you can feed your addiction!

No no, just kidding man. Take it easy, like everybody mentioned the cards will always be there. Your in school right now, so consentrate on that.

Dosen't mean you can't come on the boards from time to time, dosen't mean you gotta buy cards every day or week, just buy when you can, and if you can't at all, theres still things you can do to stay in the game without spending money.

Theres people who take dacade break from cards, not telling you to do that, lol.

Alright man, take care and good luck you no matter what you deceide to do.

  • Every one of us has had to slow down during the end of High School and beyond.
Enjoy all that life has to offer and come back to the cards when you realize that they are still pretty cool to play around with...

I stopped collecting during my sophmore year in HS. Didn't start again until 8 years out of HS. Not sure if I wish I got back in, it's kinda addicting. I should have spent the money on Ebay stock! lol
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!

I took a little more than a decade off from cards between completing high school and college. Life is all about priorities, and at different times in life your priorities change. When I was your age, I was more worried about having gas for my car and money to blow on beer and women. Cardboard was the last thing on my mind. Cards will always be there, but you will only be young once so enjoy it while you can.

I think you are both stealing my story. Only at the third sale to file bankruptcy for hospital bills.

Hope you stick around Goot, for one thing, Goot is a cool name...second thing, you brought me back in time 15 years when your old gf and you split....,fourth, the baseball photos were cool....and most important, many of us need message boards to pass time while waiting for rocks to fall for the sky....or something else to happen....like a late dinner....hmmmm.

Most of us have taken at least some time off, but most of us have also been drawn back in, eventually.

Stick around the boards, at least. We need all the Braves fans we can get image
  • Enjoy your highschool days for as long as possible (some people here I'm sure are still enjoying them, or still enjoying their childhood days).

I've gone in spurts. What I like about cards is that there are always deals to be had. There are always new things that you can do. New ways to collect. New ways to arrange things.

Some things go down in price, and you thought you'd never be able to afford it. Some cards that are rare, you thought you'd never find, you'll find.

I think its fun to rediscover things. When I was 10 or 12, I got a set of baseball greats cards. Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Gehrig. I was amazed at them, blew me away. I forgot about them for a long time, then re-discovered them recently...they make me want to collect cards from that era.

Theres alot of cards and sets like that. But have fun though.
