Spanish Escudo

A friend from Germany just showed me a coin that he inherited from his grandfather. The coin is a well worn 1700's Spanish Escudo 8 (cob). Does anyone have any idea on a price for this beauty?

  • It's a gold coin, weight I'd guess is close to 1 ounce.

A picture would be extremely helpful, also info on condition and date (if you can see one).
Pretty sure Spain didn't issue cobs in the 1700's so it's either a Spanish colony such as Mexico, Guatemala, Bolivia... or a 1600's coin.
Even so, a 1600's cob 8 Escudos can range in price from just above gold melt in G4 (or lower) to 2-7 thousand dollars in XF.
But in reality you’ll need to give more info to get a better estimate then "at least gold melt" and preferably a good picture.

The value of these pieces depends on date, mint, condition... and whether or not they're genuine. The minimum value (if genuine) would of course be bullion value; 8 escudos should be around 3/4 of an ounce of gold.
Waste no more time arguing what a good man should be. Be one.

Apparently I have been awarded one DPOTD. B)

This is a 1730 8 escudo cob from the Lima Peru mint. Appears to be about VF but with some terrible double striking. There also may be some clipping that happened at 12:00 on the cross side. This coin should weigh 27g. It is typical condition for a coin made into jewelry. I think these are going for about $2500 wholesale, but I could be off a bit on that. I see nothing that throws up any red flags, but I would have to see it in hand to be sure it was authentic.
