1913 3 1/2 leg 2 1/2 feather buffalo nickel

Wow what a rare coin! I was lucky enough to pick this one off of fleabay, not for a pittance, but for a good deal. This is I believe the rarest of the 3 1/2 leg varieties, and looks to be a nice F.

I agree - is the partial feather on the obv a key pick up point for this variety, or do some 4-leggers have this same partial feather?

Well I don't have the coin in hand atm, but here is a low quality comparison. One of the markers is the 2 1/2 feather obverse, but a 2 1/2 feather obverse comes with a 4 legged reverse too. Besides the weak leg, the buffalo's beard is partially brushed away too, which is evident in the previous photos. The most solid evidence that it is legit is that Ron Pope bid on it as well image

Well, I tried but was a distant second place. I have two of 'em-a cleaned XF and a PCGS slabbed MS64-each a different stage of the 3 1/2 legged die. Also have the 2 1/2 feather obverse with the normal four legged reverse-MUCH easier to find than the die paired with the 3 1/2 legged.

Ron- does this coin look like the stage A or stage B reverse? I was thinking since the beard was mostly wiped away, that it was stage B, but I'd like to hear your thoughts.

    buffnut,
Nice pick up but I really do see 4 legs on the pic posted. Am I supposed to look at the leg or hoof or ?
Still not clear to me. Thanks,

    Travis-

It's hard to tell from the picture which Die Stage your coin is. I've only ever seen a single coin from Die Stage B-all the rest have been Die Stage A.

Travis -- very nice pickup. I think you might even call this one a "droopy chin" variety too, compare the chin line with a normal 1913 type one. The CP guide refers to FS 1913-401 as a two feather variety and not a two and one half feather. So maybe this should be best described as "2 feather -- droopy chin -- 3 & 1/2 legged" variety. A triple variety which you do not run accross very often.
Very nice, congratulations!! Tom Arch BUFFNIXX
