Roman denarius from aureus die?

I just purchased the Trajan denarius below. It was described as "probably struck with dies created for an aureus". Would that have been said because of the high relief on portrait, the exact die being known on an aureus, or just hype? Doesn't really matter as I am delighted with the coin, just curious.

  • Thank you both.

I will never have a very large collection but hope that it will be a joy to look at. I must have looked at 5,000 Roman imperial silver coins online in the last two months and only found about 10 that combined the desired aspects of being well centered, well struck, complete inscriptions, complete design, and well preserved. The search will be fun.

That's pretty cool, I'd like to see a coin with that exact die in gold. That would be cool to have two of them side by side.

LL - That was part of my reason for asking the question. If it really was used for gold, I sure would like to own an example (but there is a reason I decided to collect silver - I can't afford the best quality in Roman gold)
