Football question - what does FC stand for?

I recently bought a college ring, and next to the player's name is "FC". I'm assuming this person was a player and not a staff member because they have a number on the ring too (27). Does anyone know what position FC stands for?

  • Is it anywhere near the TEAM name? The only thing I can think of is "Football Club"

  • It's below the guy's name. I've seen other rings from the team and they have positions like "RB" or "IL" in that place.

    heck if I know.

    Good for you.
  • Most teams have a ton of benchwarmers, but I figured even these guys have positions. The fact that the ring fits me leads me to believe that the guy's stature was less than impressive. Maybe it could mean football club.
  • And the answer is field cornerback, which are CBs that are reserves on the team.

Field Cornerback - I Googled it and didn't spend much time on it, but it seems like a starting position probably in certain defensive packages. Weren't that many hits for it - must be something (a term) only a few coaches use.

Thanks Steve. Further research revealed the guy was a key player on the team and saw plenty of playing time. He weighed about 150 lbs. soaking wet, but always found himself in great position and was a sure tackler.

yes i think your right about field corner. in college the hashmarks are different than the NFL. There is another position called boundary corner, which i assume responds to the corner that lines up on the side of the field that is shorter. remember that the hasmarks are wider in college, making for shorter and longer sides of the line of scrimage. i assume that the field corner plays the other side than the boudary corner.

"Strengths: Mike Echols is Wisconsin's "boundary" cornerback, which means he plays the short side of the field."

But seriously, guess it's similar to a rover; just depends on the system?

Also of course the #27 is consistent with a player number for a cornerback. This guy was most likely used in dime packages. Be "semi-interesting" if Brian finds out the player...puts a name to the ring...might be a brief football biography on him on a college website somewhere.
