Ebay feedback question

Would you leave negative feedback if you received an item and it smelled horribly of smoke? I bought some 2x2's off of ebay (800 of them) and got them today. I opened the box and they stunk horribly of smoke. I'm not a smoker plus i have bad allergies and asthma. I contacted the seller and thanked him for the fast shipping and the nice price on the 2x2's but I wasn't happy about the smoke smell. His return policy is that I pay for shipping back to him and he refunds the auction price. I don't want to go this route because I don't want to fork out the cash to send the items back. Should I :
A) Leave positive feedback with a note the item smelled like smoke
B) send the items back and loose money
C) Use them and leave positive feedback (Would the smoke smell hurt the coins?)
D) Leave negative feedback that the items smelled.
E) Just get over it and not be so anal about sutff..
Thanks
Todd

Well it seems that I'm either overly anal about stuff, or we have a few smokers around here... either way... here is the question at hand. Will the smoke in the 2x2's harm the coins. I ask this because I bought a silver dime set that was in a whitman folder that a smoker owned. The face of the coins were yellow and black but the backs were perfect. I don't want my coins looking like a smokers teeth....

Personally, I would go with option B.

Acetone works very nicely on tobacco smoke residue.

(Usual conditions - pure stuff followed by couple of distilled/deionized water rinses.

Yeah I hit them with some acetone and it came right off. I just didn't know how it would affect the finish of say a proof coin or similar type surface. I know the silver dimes aren't as brilliant on the front as the back.

the smell shouldn't hurt the coins

if it really bothers you, B, if not E

also, you can put the 2x2's in the garage or on a window sill and let them air out and it should get rid of the smell

I smoke, but I hate the smell of it on "stuff", so I use Febreze all the time. It works well image

  • I received a coin from an Irish guy once which I won on Ebay which totally reeked of smoke.

As a non smoker I can tell you that its fairly horrible to open a package and have a wave of cigarette or cigar smell hit you straight on. Therefore I don't think that you are being too anal at all.

What about leaving a Neutral rating saying the items smelled of smoke and that you could refund the item if you wished too but at a cost to yourself ( if that is where you are leaving your correspondence with the seller ).

The guy email me back and advised that he apologized for the smoke smell and has recently been trying to quit. He offered to take the items back but again I had to eat the shipping. I guess I expect too much for people to say whether or not an item has been in a smokey environment. I left him positive feedback due the super fast shipping and the price of the auction was great (he had 332 positive feedbacks and no negatives so I guess he wasn't trying to get one over on me). I have set the 2x2's out to air out and wiped the inside down with a cloth to get any unwanted contaminants off. Thanks for the ideas guys. Lata.

As a smoker, I second that as well.

I do think things tend to air out on their own, though.
  • In my previous post I said that I am a non-smoker....which is true.

But I am really an ex-smoker and guys, the best thing I ever did was to give them up.

My post wasn't to bash smokers, I just wanted to make sure I was giving someone a fair shake on sending an item that smelled of smoke and not noting it. I do notice that a lot of auctions, mine included, state that the item comes from a smoke free environment. If people wanna smoke that is fine with me, just let me know that the items you are selling may smell like smoke. I mean I drink beer but I don't send people coin supplies and such with beer spilled all over them. Just a courtesy thing for me I guess. Regardless thanks for the feedback and assistance with making a decision. lata guys!

People that smoke honestly don't realize how bad they smell.
I've been in homes of smokers that literally made me sick.

You could simply send the seller email saying you're unhappy and ask him to pay for the return shipping and refund your purchase (+S&H). If you have a kind hearted seller you'll end up cash neutral, he'll have lost a few bucks on shipping, but at the end of the day, you can both leave positive feedback (or simply no feedback).

Misunderstandings happen - give your seller the chance to make you a satisfied customer.

In other news, you can contact the guys at E&T Kointainer directly and order 800 flips at a very reasonable price. I think that's right on the edge of getting dealer prices - and to get those all you have to do is ask the E&T Kointainer guy.

Just my thoughts. Good luck. Hope it works out okay for you.

I agree with lathmach. And I recommend "B." People ought to know by now how most feel about smoky merchandise.

I am glad I never took up that disgusting habit.
