The 1953 Coronation Crown

I was just reading through "The Guide Book of Great Britains Modern Coins" by Taylor and James which discusses coins from 1860-1960, published in 1961. They say the 1953 Coronation Crown is "probably one of the most artistics coins of Britain". It's a cheap little publication but the prices seem a little high. What say you all, this one is from my '53 proof set.

The '53 Coronation crown design is very nice and you have a beautiful example!

I'm kind of partial to the Wreath crown myself image

The '53 crown is a pretty neat departure from the typical British issue depicting the monarch's head on the obverse.

Rating the other 20th century predecimal crowns (ratings based on a 5-star system, where the Gothic Crown is 5 stars):

    *** Edward VII 1902
    **** George V Wreath series (1927-1934, 1936) - nifty and rare series.
** George V Rocking Horse - nice obverse, silly reverse (sorry Trozau image ) - I will say that a good cartwheel lustre piece is pretty cool, but mostly on the obverse.
** George VI coronation, 1937 - OK coin, reverse is similar to the half crown design, but is a bit more attractive.
*** George VI FOB, 1951 - Pistrucci returns to the crown for the last time
*** Elizabeth II coronation, 1953, as described above, extra stars for a bit of originality
    * Elizabeth II British Trades Fair, 1960 image
(no stars) Churchill Crown, 1965 - more recent releases from the mint are beginning to compete with this for worst British coin of all time. As it is, it is the worst predecimal coin of all time.

There was a Spink pattern Crown done for Edward VII in 1902 that featured the King on a horse as well. That was first return of the King on a horse featured on a Crown, I believe, since Charles I. I think Elizabeth II may be the first Queen featured on a horse on a Crown

I have these except the Churchill, I don't know how long ago I sold my last one, but it's now time to see these crowns from the album slabbed and sold, I'm curious to see what they'll grade. Forum concencus is that the 1902 is a proof, the 1927 is an ex NGC PF64, and the rocking chair has some really nice pinks and blues. The 51 and 37 are nice proofs too. Time to let them all go.

Sorry... I will vote for the Spink 1902 Edward VII pattern for the best 20th Century

While the Gothic Crown is considered the best Crown design, I think the young head George II is alittle underrated as is the George IV crowns dated 1821 and 1822
