Bill Buckner honored at Red Sox opening day in Boston today.

Bill Buckner (the goat of the Mets - Red Sox WS in '87), threw out the first pitch at Fenway today. From behind a HUGE banner draped across the green monster, declaring the Red Sox as WS Champions, came Buckner with a Red Sox shirt on. He walked to the pitchers mound to an enormous standing ovation by the Red Sox faithful. He was obviously emotionally moved by the ovation and acceptance from the fans. He threw the first pitch to Dwight Evans and it was clearly a strike to boot. A class act by Red Sox management to have Billy Bucks honored in such a wonderful manner...it was just very, very cool to watch. Back in the day, Buckner was skewered for his faux pas wicket shot at first base which led to a Mets victory and eventual WS win.

Celtics of old, along with Patriots and Bruins former star players were on the field to enjoy the moment. The ring ceremony was held under pristine, clear blue skies, but a chilly 47 degrees at the start of the game.

The CD of the ceremonies should be well worth the price, that is if you're a Red Sox fan.

Unfortunately for Tigers fans, they lost 5-0 under the pressure of Daisuke, who was on his game with 7 Ks.

Bill Buckner, long out of baseball says he is at peace with himself over what happened and when
people bring it up it doesn't bother him anymore.

Perhaps Buckner will never be completely appreciated for being one of the most difficult batters in MLB history to strike out... even Ted Williams commented on what a great swing Buckner had

Just like I've asserted before with Steve Bartlett (remember, in that case all the other fans around him were reaching for the ball just as much as he was), Bill Buckner also did not deserve all the blame for losing that game. I mean, how come no one talks about the pitcher who threw the wild pitch to get the tying run across, for example? Or the fact that the Red Sox had a 3-0 lead in Game 7 and blew it?
