Mix in Boone Pickens who is worth a reported $3 billion, a record $165 million gift to Oklahoma State, Bill Self who just won the NCAA Basketball Title, Pickens desire to have a competitive athletic program, Bill Self an Oklahoma State alumni ... how can self NOT leave Kansas?

    Kansas B-ball>OK state B-ball

Alumni or not, that is not even a lateral move.

Bill Self is a good coach... money has its place, however, coaches unfortunately get too caught up in living the dreams of others and the old legends instead of creating their own legendary status by taking program from nothing to respect and national prominence. I think what Bill Snyder did at Kansas State is a great example.

He could say money is not important and he is happy where he is...... image

Self has strong emotional ties with Oklahoma State and combine that with Boone Pickens money I think an announcement is
coming pretty soon about him leaving. Kansas could get in a bidding war but I think they would ultimately loose if push comes to
    shove.

I don't particularly like it when a wealthy alumni throws money around an athletic dept. and essentially buys it to satisfy an
ego trip they are on but that is the way is goes sometimes.

Self will of course become a pariah at Kansas if he leaves which is too bad after all the good feelings of winning a championship.
  • It's not like he's living off minimum wage at Kansas.

OK State plays second fiddle to OU in Oklahoma in pretty much everything where as Kansas seems to have a slightly larger following than K-State does. Can you imagine the difference in recruiting when trying to get a kid to come from Kansas vs. coming to OK State?

Historic BBall program > Slightly above average BBall program

championship team > first round loss in the NIT

= Kansas seems like the obvious choice.

Self wants "security" from Kansas and I don't think the $1.3 million a year he is getting now will do the job. Kansas is probably going to
have to up the amount to the $3 million range or higher to fend off Oklahoma State.

I think Kansas is going to do what it takes to keep Self in Lawrence. They can't outbid T. Boone Pickens, but they don't have to.
KU is Self's dream job, he doesn't want to coach anywhere else.

It may not be a lateral move in terms of the prestige of being the coach of Kansas vs. the coach of Oklahoma State, but consider this:

He's won the national championship--he can not go any higher at Kansas. Now the expectations will be great, the next few years are going to seem a disappointment if they can't repeat this success. The expectations (e.g. "pressure") will be less at Oklahoma State.

Oklahoma State is his alma matre (sp.?)--most everyone has a deep love of the college they attended.

Nice increase in pay to secure his children's and grandchildren's future security.

    If I was offered
    1. A huge pay raise
    2. For a less pressure job
    3. At the college I love the most

I would be there in a minute.

Just my thoughts on the situation.

Whatever Coach Self chooses to do--I wish him well.
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

He just announced he needs "security", pony up KU Self has you by the balls. Oklahoma State has alot of basketball tradition going back to Henry Iba, pretty much invented the modern game.

  • I wish the NCAA could somehow curb Pickens spending. The man has practically purchased an athletic dept. Nearly 300 mill for Football. He "donated" 140 million so he could choose the next athletic director. Now he wants to throw upwards of 40 million at a hoops coach?

There will be pressure at Oklahoma State for him to win, they won't be paying him $3 million + just to run a so so basketball team.

He might have some more breathing room to build a program but if the results are not there in a few years watch out.

Either place where he ends up it is going to be the same formula:

Big money for coach = expectations of big results.

Would you want to curb someone from spending money building a state of the art chemistry lab or science center? To me universities depend on donations for a majority of the their major renovations of any buildings or departments. This money spent by Pickens allows OSU to spend their money on other academic programs instead of sports. Sorry if OSU has better alumni than KU.

It depends on how prominent a university wants to make sports in the structure of the university. Pickens has apparently decided to make
it a big deal by throwing a lot of money around that could have probably been better spend on academic programs but is anyone going to
tell him that? image I'm sure a few people at OSU are wondering just who is running things there?

Bob Dylan once said "Money doesn't talk, it swears" I always liked that quote.
