I don't know a thing about these coins but go ahead and ask right out here in public. I would like to learn from the ensuing posts.
  • I actually was hoping to be able to talk to someone on the phone rather than going back and forth here on the forums and then later post back with the information I uncover. I don't know a lot about these (and other modern foreign coins) and I intend to become as near an expert as I can on these neat coins.

Well, I think I just answered one of my biggest questions, how to tell the difference between a Proof and a Specimen.

The answer is with the Obverse side of the coin. The Proofs are your normal proofs, and the Specimens look like Reverse Proofs. So that was the biggest thing that was perplexing me, because I have a set of Platinum Coins where 4 of the denominations are designated Specimen and 1 is designated Proof. In looking at the coins closer, it appears that the 1 denomination that is designated Proof is the only one done correctly... I think... I've got an e-mail out to someone that should be able to clarify... so, we'll see within the next day or so and then I'll report back. Once I have some pictures taken, I may even share some of them with the forum here. These coins really are incredible and some of the $20 Commemorative Silver ones are absolutely amazing!

    Take care!

  • Well, the Royal Canadian Mint sure threw a monkey wrench into my understandings. I have some Platinum Holograms where the Obverse is a proof type of coin. But, for whatever reason, the Canadian Mint calls them specimen. Go figure...
