NEWP: Sede Vacante medal from Freising (1763)

I admit I am really hooked on these german state sede vacante medals. This is the last one that arrived this week. Its from Freising, which is a town in Bavaria, Germany with a total population of 48,500. Freising is one of the oldest settlements in Bavaria, gaining importance by becoming a major religious center in the early middle ages. Saint Corbinian settled at a shrine that already existed at Freising in 724. He was the forerunner of the diocese of Freising, established after his death by Saint Boniface. According to his Vita by Bishop Arbeo he ordered a bear to carry his luggage over the Alps after it had killed his packhorse. The saddled bear is still the symbol of the city, displayed in the coat of arms.

The medal commemorates the death of Johann Theodor of Bavaria, who was the Prince-Bishop of Freising. I am still working on a better understanding of the significance of St. Korbinian and St. Sigismund on the obverse. Zepernick 84, 44 mm in size.
