67 Down--1974 Deckle Edge Baseball Completed in PSA 8 or Better

My 67th set completion (1974 Topps Deckle Edge Baseball) does not fit into the years that I would consider to be vintage or semi-vintage but given its value(over $17,000 SMR in psa 9), that it is loaded with stars(Bench, Aaron, Reggie, Nolan, Thurman, FRobby, Brooks and Yaz to name a few), and that it is reasonably challenging to assemble in high grade, I am including it in my quest for 100 vintage or semi-vintage sets.

I bought this set from the infamous Alan Rosen in an auction about 15 years ago. The cards were advertised as mint. Well Alan got this one right. Only three cards came back less than psa 8 and two of the cards were damaged by the Mr. Mint card gard which is sticky and stuck to the card. After upgrading these three cards--the last of which was Richie Hebner--I now have a set which has 5 psa 10s, 50 psa 9s and 17 psa 8s. Not bad for a set I bought for under $1,000.

With a set rating of 8.77, the set ranks 4th in the PSA Set Registry. I will let the set rest here.

The goal remains 100 vintage or semi-vintage sets in PSA 8 or better. Must have 40 or so sets down to last 1-6 cards. Will print these out shortly.

Thanks to all for their help in my quest.

Only if King Kellogg gives me his personal approval--as everyone knows--I love those Kellogg "vintage" sets.

He'd have to proxy it Jim- Larry sold his entire collection about 8 months ago. But I"m sure he would and wish you best of luck.
He's now dealing in collectable currency and chosing between "Bishop of Bucks" and "Count of Currency"
Congrats on hitting the 2/3rds mark.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

I am not a Registry person. Is there any distinction made between white and gray back cards in completing a set ? Is there a any recognition for collecting the undeckled proof cards from this set ?
    Topps Baseball-1948, 1951 to 2017
    Bowman Baseball -1948-1955

    Al...

there is no distiction made in completing a set between the white back and gray back variations. To the best of my knowledge PSA does not grade the undeckled cards, so it is unrecognized as far as the registry goes.

  • James,
This is ridiculous. Lately it has been one a week.
You should up your goal. You may make 100 by Thanksgiving.
Someday before I die, I will make the pilgramage.
There are some great collections. in terms of graded cards. This is easily the best.
I think they should put it in the PSA collection HOF, again.
    It's big enough.
    Way to go Jim.

    Fuzz,

Don't make it sound easy--find me a 53 Bowman PSA 8 Gillom or a 60 Fleer Woodward PSA 8 or a 64 Kahn Clendon Thomas in an 8 and I will consider setting a more aggressive goal.

  • When did you start collecting PSA graded cards and "the quest for 100" began? 2002?
  • DavalilloDavalillo Posts: 1,846 ✭✭
    Chris,

Started collecting PSA cards early 90s--quest for 100 early this decade.
