Stack's Auction as Economic Indicator

In the Stack's recent Mail and Internet Bid Sale, I was surprised to win all three items on which I had bid and under my maximum. They were relatively modest bids, too. Normally, I lose out or pay my maximum bid. If I win a lot, it is usually something relatively shoddy that no one else wants.
I took a quick look at a few other realized prices and quite a few were well under estimate.
I wonder if this is a sign that collectors are tightening their wallets.
