1910 PCGS 63BN MPL delivered today!

Upon opening the package ( The seller taped and taped and taped it good) my first glimpse of the MPL was WOW!!! what colors!!! I was truly surprised at the vibrant colors. The posted pics at ebay had me thinking that it was going to be soft minimal color and dark brown. The Obverse is really a soild covering of auqa green blue with hints of gold. Abe's head is covered in a nice crimson color with shades of crimson and teal splashed about from 9 o'clock to 1 o'clock. The face of Lincoln is bathed in a goldish hue. Looking straight on the reverse appears a light to med brown until light hits it and then the whole reverse takes on a nice green amber color with the raised letters appearing a warm brown. Only thing i see on the entire coin is a little speck right below the ER in america. Does not take away in the least IMO. This coin is slabed in a older green label holder. Graded PR63 BN. They were grading hard on that day in my opinion or has the coin improved with age like wine?. Looks as nice as any 64 or 65 BN as i have ever seen in person. I hate to call it undergraded cause i read about that all the time on these boards. ONLY issue with this coin is the holder. It suffers from quite a few scratches. Can anything be done to minimize this? Are those products sold at ebay any good? (slab renew).

My 1910 does not have much company at the moment since i sent 7 mattes to anacs on sunday. I was at the grapvine TX show and anacs was there. They made me a decent deal to send in a dozen coins for price of .... The guy doing the submissions said he thought the SEGS 1915 MPL would cross over to anacs at a point higher. I am waiting to see what the 4 raw ones do to determine if they get sent to pcgs when the come back.

A little off subject here but how do you guys get those good pics you post on here? What type camera or scanner do you use?

I finally scored another copy of the Lincoln diagonistics book on ebay the other day. Only cost me 22 ship for the 9 dollar book. I have been trying for weeks to get that book. Mine got lifted a few months back at a show.

I would send that 1910 in for a grade review. I had success both times. Perhaps even sending it to Brian Wagner for a professional opinion. That way, you may get not only a new grade, but a shiny new holder too.

Congrats on the new addition. Im not sure I would agree with ANACS, but if there are cleaned raw coins in your mix I guess it makes sense.

Photos make the coin. Photos Really make the MPL>

I use a Kodak Z712IS This is a fairly inexpensive camera with 7.1 megapixels and a lot of optical and digital zoom. This sits mounted on a copy stand (OK, really an old federal four five enlarger stand) I shoot with the camera 28 inches up from the coin, and I use two (or one) moveable desk lamps. Usually, for most coins, just a straight down shot is best. While looking at the view screen on the camera, I arrange the lights to put the reflections and highlights where I want them. For the MPL's, after you spend a lot of loupe quality time with the coin, you find it has a very small angle where it shows back all the color it has captured. This is by using one light. To photograph it, its a matter of holding the coin, or propping it up at that magic angle, while having the light just at the right point. It takes some experimenting.... If you tilt it too much you skew the image and either the focus is off or the coin is not round looking. Usually you'll get the right colors and look if the light is JUST reflected off the slab just a tad away from the image of the coin, so crop close.

Figuring out how they get the grade.....thats tough. Ive found most 63's are a little difficult to view in hand, so I think the numbers are more related to first impression visibility, with the BN's. Once you get the light on them and use a loupe or a photo, they can look as detailed and as interesting as any higher grade. Distracting spots or stains determine and limit grade as well. I dont think the reverse carries as much weight with an MPL grade as with other coins...but thats just what Ive seen with what I have.

Regarding the picture taking, there is a lot of past discussion on the coin forum. If you do some searches, you can find them. Basically, it comes down to two types of Cameras. High end DSLR (over $500) and small pocket size Digital cameras that come with a macro feature.

The camera may not be half as important as the lighting. That takes much longer to learn. Also, Mattes are VERY hard to capture the colors. You just have to keep practicing. Oh yeah, one more item, you really need to have a stand of some kind for your camera in order to shoot low light sharp pictures.

    Hi pennyannie,
I, recently, bought Slab Renew on Ebay because I love great looking slabs with minimal scratches. This product will clean the slab and make it sparkle. It eliminates the hairline scratches but will not remove the deeper ones. I've even tried multiple applications on major scratches and they will not disappear. However, my slabs do look nicer and I like the product. Just do not expect the major scratches to improve. Please note this is only my opinion, but it was formulated by actual use of the product.

  • I agree with registrynut, slab renew will do wonders for your medium to lightly scratched slabs!
