Peace Dollars....another series I can't grade (pics)...can you?

BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,556 ✭✭✭✭✭
Here is another coin, in a slab, in a series I don't know well enough to grade.
Just got it from another member and I kind of like it. Got it for my son (we have a MS65 of the same date but figured "what the hey?" and got this one, no picture beforehand).

So, what would you grade it? I can honestly say that I never would have graded it the same as the TPGS did as I don't know the series and know what is expected by the date/die (ie....sharp/dull/full details/etc).

What is wear and what is just from its strike are hard to judge from a picture.
I would guess it is au55-ms64 with good eye appeal.

I can't grade them to save my life. That's why I don't collect them. The design is very attractive, but the strikes always are weak. The reverses are always so weak they look like they are VF, even when the coin is BU. Very frustrating series.

    edited to fix a typo.

Your pics complement the coin nicely for show-n-tell but not for grading.

Point taken....redid photo but used a couple different shots that I was doing to move the lighting around to draw out the colors a bit more. Coin is still the same, nothing done to hide anything on the coin.

    Better?

Nice coin and I like the toning...I would go with MS 63 on this one. It is a tough series to grade because of the strike problems, presence of bag marks, etc. Heck this one has a lot of them!

    I'll take a SWAG and say MS63.

Sure enough, it is Man Coulter. That picture is more discreet than most, as it doesn't show her Adam's apple.

I'll go AU58 here on this one too... much better pics! image

    LOL

Frankly, I don't get the attraction a lot of guys have to AC. She's so skinny that she makes Mary Kate Olsen look obese and she's got that obnoxious voice. She is also pretty damned full of herself... and I'm a conservative... I just don't care for Ann... I prefer my women with curves...and a vagina.

Edited to add: Sorry...I watch too much Family Guy. Need I say more?

Looks like an MS63 but I need to ask, has this coin already been graded? That sure looks like slab glare. Of course you could heve it in a 2x2 or in a generic plactic case but I would expect that you'd remove it prior to photographing.

    Well?

I'll give the grade on this one since so few people were brave enough to respond image
(the walking liberty thread has 3 pages already).

    NGC MS63

The only other one we have, for 1923, and really the only other one paid attention to, is a MS65, so I guess I expected more since I took that as what it should be struck like.

I do like the toning on this one though....reminds me of some of the IHC proofs where you need to tilt it in the light and then you will get some cool color.

Thanks for all the guesses, and some hit it right on! Even from a picture!
And, thanks for those who pointed out that the strike IS poor on this year's Peace dollars. I didn't know that and I like learning all the time!
