Penny for your thoughts: first year Lincoln *grade revealed*

Interested in the board's opinion of this one, thanks for your expertise and your comments! I'll post actual grade later...update: coin is graded MS65RD in a 2nd generation holder. It is gorgeous in hand, with full mint bloom and stunning color to both sides! I'll try to post some other pictures later on. I own a few nice MS66RD's and this one is every bit as good as those. May be time for a regrade! Thanks for all the opinions.

  • Nice Lincoln there. Im going to say a sweet 65 red, a 66 if not for the hit under the neck. Not a bad looking coin there at all.

66RD! What's going on above "Unum"?
  • I'm going with a 66RD as well
  • smokincoin, I'm not sure what that is above UNUM. It could be a scratch, but it goes "through" the U without crossing the surface, which seems to be more of a die crack or striking error than a traditional scratch...although it is reflective at certain angles (like the one in the picture) more as a scratch would be. So in summary, I'm really not sure! Maybe somebody else has an idea, or has seem something similar. It's a damn hard place to get a scratch, and one that I honestly did not even notice for awhile!

I don't think that is a scratch, with that said my first impression was 65.

    66RD +
  • I would say the obverse is 65 and the reverse 66 that makes it a MS65.5

The scratch looks like a die scratch to me. My first impression was a 66RD... maybe a 65*.

Nice Coin... now that you have my thoughts, I expect the penny in returnimage

64RD spotting, planchet nicks on shoulder denote a tad weak strike I think the image is a bit light and probably dosent show the coin as it is in hand.

Less common than the VDB, a nice coin.
  • my guess is 65 RD
There is nothing like an uncirculated set of washington quarters!!!
  • Ambro51, this coin looks WAY better in person than I was able to capture in these pics. I'm going to try to take some more and reduce the lighting a bit. The marks on the shoulder aren't significant at all.

    high end 64RD or 65RD
  • PCGS is unbelievably strict on this year of the Lincoln series. It could be since thousands of reds have been submitted. I currently have a 65 RD that appears to be a no-brainer 6. I say 65 RD with a die crack over UNUM.

    Nice coin.

  • A lovely 65RD with some minor carbon spots limiting a higher grade.

65 RD was my first thought.

My first impression was 66RD, or as others have said, a 65RD holder with a sticker. Maybe even a 64RD holder with two stickers. image

My first impression was 65RD, but I wouldn't argue with those that say 66RD either. Unless of course, I was buying it image

PCGS is being very tough across the board these days. It might be prudent to hold off on a regrade submission at this time.
