You may want to subscribe to Coinworld. If you have a local coin club in your area, that may be worth checking out as well.
I also strongly recommend you purchase and read some books, maybe even before subscribing to C/W or anything else.
Get a current Redbook, the ANA Grading Guide (I'm assuming you are into US coins), and the Coin Collector's Survival Manual, for starters. Enjoy!

  • What do you collect??? That will determine what books you should get. Q. David Bowers' "The Expert's Guide to Collecting and Investing in Rare Coins" is a must read. "Gold Rush" co-authored by Mitch Battino is also a good read if you are interested in gold coins.

  • i strongly second David Bower's book mentioned in the previous post!
  • Thanks for the advice, seeing im new to coins, i have only been into "modern crap" ASE, AGE as of yet. I guess im kind of a gold bug so i plan on going down that road.
    Thanks!

I have loved coins for many years. My high school year book lists me a "coin collector" and I graduated in 1973. I have had subscriptions to Coin World and Numismatic News. But never joined the ANA until a couple years ago. I am sorry that I didn't join years ago, because they have a great magazine. It is well worth the cost of membership. If I had to pick one periodical, it would have to be the ANA's "Numismatist" magazine.

A good alternative to the ANA grading book is to get a new or used copy of "Photograde". It gives you fairly decent photos showing what the various technical grades of all of the US coin series should look like.

Coin Values magazine would be good for a new collector also. It has several good articles every month as well as detailed, colored pictures showing all the grades of whatever coin series they are featuring in that issue. It also has extensive (supposedly) current coin values for all US coin series, although most of the coin prices they list are either too high or too low compared to the actual, "real world" buy-sell values. It's still a useful mag. though, especially for newcomers. image

Chuck, sounds like you are ready to become a collector. Congratulations, it is a truly wonderous adventure. A "hobby", that I sincerely enjoy.

Ignore any investment advice I ever give, there are far more on the board with more knowledge than I will attain, in that area.

Should you be lucky eneough to have a coin club nearby I would check it out.

The books and perodicals that you will purchase is determined by what has your interest. I'm currently studying AMERICAN COINAGE, 1905-1908 and 1916-1921, written by RWB.

I'm fortunate on this board to have many experts who answer my foolish questions and politely point me in the right direction.

I'm, "collecting", a little of everything. Mainly IHC, Buffs. and Morgans. I'm just a collector who will never find a true focus. This hobby has given me something money can't buy. Happiness. Should you reap just half the enjoyment I have from this hobby, you can't help but become, enlightened. Take Care, jws
