What is the standard reference for attributing small California Gold tokens by BG numbers??? Can anyone direct me to a link or site where I can find the book. Thanks in advance for your help.

You need the Breen-Gillio book entitled "California Pioneer Fractional Gold" 2nd edition.

I bought a copy at Long Beach two years ago for $20 or $30, but since then I have seen them sell for over $100. Not sure what the deal is. I'll tell you this: this book is priceless if you want to collect these coins. I just checked Amazon, and it says the book is unavailable. Maybe try Ebay?

I looked online for awhile for this book. I couldn't believe people on ebay trying to get $129 for it. I ended up buying it for under $60. Still more expensive than the original retail price.

  • The 2003 BG edition was published by Bowers and Merena in conjunction with the sale of the Jay Roe collection. B & M even offered the sale catalog and the revised BG book as a package at the time of the sale. This edition featured many/most of Roe's coins as Plate coins for the reference. IMO the Roe catalog is much better for attributing the Cal Gold pieces. The photos are better and in full color, whereas the photos in the BG book are in B & W are not of equal quality. I have actually been able to pedigree a few ex Roe coins based on the photos in the Roe catalog - I don't remember exactly how many BGs Roe was missing, but it wasn't many. You should not have a problem there. Try to get a a copy of the catalog in addition to the BG reference.
