Slug coins still work in the Toll Booths.

I am one of the honest people on earth, yes I am, but I was coming home late Sat.nignt and was driving up to a toll and went through the 50c basket toll lane and my son gave me a quarter and a slug that was in my ash tray from who knows when, I threw both in and it worked. I wonder how many slugs are being used nowadays and what is the fine for something like that. I was thinking of sending in 25c to the state and telling them about it, but I don't need to be locked up for other problems they might put on me. Anyone ever noticed this?image

I would think they could technically get you on passing counterfeit money, which would be a serious offense, but I think they have better things to do.

A few years ago I had a dvd player put in my dashboard so we could watch movies, well the frame was made of a heavy gauge metal and the prefabed holes when the tech punched out the holes for the wiring the slugs look and were the same size of a quarter. What is a person to do when your tossing and looking and noticed your sent flying a piece of prefabed slug instead of a quarter. See that's why you don't drive at night when you are the only one awake and then you ask for help. My bad and I feel bad, but in 2008 the tolls don't have a reject for this stuff. Oh well, if the state along I-95 wants their money pm me and I will pay up.

The toll booths on the Illinois tollway, apparently, have multilevel
discriminators. When traffic backs up they'll accept just about any-
thing and otherwise they'll reject even slightly damaged coin.

They don't return coin, you just have to toss more in.

In New Hampshire, when they used to accept tokens in addition to quarters, I know I used to get by using Fun Spot tokens image Worked like a charm.

Many toll-plazas have a no chase policy. Finding which ones do is the hard part.

Years ago I was passing through NH once and when I got to the toll I realized I had no money left (spent it all in Canada). All I had was a couple of canadian ashtray nickels so I tossed them in and hauled %ss out of there. An alarm started ringing but nothing ever came of it. Felt like such a criminal image

Where do you guys get this stuff fromimage I sure didn't put that slimmy thing in the toll basket or did I.image
  • A growing number of toll roads now have cameras at the lanes. They are mostly used for the electronic toll devices. I would imagine if slugs were a problem they could use the cameras and better coin counting machines to snap a photo of your car and plate....then that "quarter" might cost you......it's not a counterfeit situation, more like a theft of services.

  • I doubt this a completely hypothetical question, because I'm sure it must happen from time to time, albeit very rarely: what happens if a driver literally doesn't have the coins/cash to pay the toll? For example, the person is a neat freak and doesn't leave loose coins in their console tray, etc, and forgot his/her wallet. Do they actually hail a transit cop/highway patrolman to cite the driver. My best guess is that the toll booth collector simply tosses in the required coins out of their own pocket change, not necessarily out of any altruistic motivation, but rather it saves him/her the trouble of summoning a cop/writing down an incident report, etc.

In the stamp world there is a neat story of a guy from NJ or NY (I forget which) who would buy the slugs in bulk
from the city by the pound (city thought they were getting a great deal, getting rid of all the slugs and foreign
coins), then turn right around and re-sell them at flea markets, advertising to sell toll and parking tokens!

For all I know, the guy is still doing it.
