Just saw Pete Rose.......the dude's scary looking

I'm in Vegas right now staying at Caesar's Palace. Brought my laptop and all. Went down stairs for dinner an hour ago and
saw Pete Rose walking towards me. I did a double take to make sure and he glanced at me. I didn't realize the man was kinda short, fat, and his hair was orangy and all over the place. He looked
like he just rolled out of bed wearing his PJ's. His suit was white
with spots here and there, so they did like pajamas.

Does he live in Vegas? I know he'll sign anything you want as long
as you fork over cash.....I thought about it for a split second, but kept going....I was hungry.

    Pete in Vegas? SHOCKER

Actually I like the guy- I would have asked for an autograph
  • He's in Vegas more than he's not. Great player, sad man.

  • Yeah, I've heard he is in Vegas all the time. I think some card shop has him in doing signings all the time.

    <<< dude's scary looking >>>

5 months in jail might do that to ya.
  • I am pretty sure he is doing his monthly signings. He just came back here to Cincinnati about a month ago, but talking to a local card shop dealer, he said that he does signings so many months out of the year in Vegas.

He's gotta support his gambling habit somehow. What is a better location for Pete to be other than the "gambling capitol of the world"

And while I was searching for key word Ugly Pete Rose under the pic section of google, I came across this one, and just couldn't help myself, so here it is image

Eagle eye, this is what you call getting old. Wait until your are in your 60's, and take a look in the mirror. I'm sure we will all not be real flattering to look at, when we get to Pete's age.

Still......... sounds rediculous to have a chance to meet Pete Rose, and get a sig, instead, pass, in order to fill your stomach. You can eat at anytime, but not all of us get lucky enough to meet Pete Rose, one of the all-time greats. I know I wish I had that opportunity, and would not have made the same choice you did.

Either way, I'm not trying to bust your chops, but I would have rather met Pete, than fill my gut.

  • If Pete was nice enough to give an Autograph to a true fan for FREE, then maybe I'd say hi to him. but he is a liar and an embarassment to the game; money grubbing addict with no sense of pride.
  • CDsNutsCDsNuts Posts: 10,092
Yeah, how could you pass on the rare opportunity to walk up to a man that was good at baseball and ask him to write his name on a piece of paper? Nevermind the fact that he probably just dropped $30k at the craps table. I'm sure he would've politely signed your piece of paper, taken a picture with you and answered any of the questions you had that he's answered 4 million times before. Hell, if you told him you were hungry he probably would've taken you to the steakhouse.
  • Hey guys, if we all knew the real character of our cardboard heroes, you could bash almost all of them in this manner.

The majority of them are flawed people.... I do not care how they are in their private lives. I appreciate what they did on the field.

But....... for someone like me who will probably never have the chance to meet Pete Rose, the decision is not even close. I would have got a Pete sig, and figured I could eat later in the day/evening.

LOL guys, I never said I was a fan of Rose....all I said was I saw the man
walking towards me down the lobby. Also, would it not be inappropriate to
stop the dude in the his tracks, and say "wow, you're Pete Rose, can you please
sign this piece of paper for me"? If I was a fan, then I may have done it.
I know of Pete Rose. I don't care about baseball.

Now if I saw Wayne Gretzky, or Gordie Howe walking my way; it would of been
a different scenario. I probably would of ignored the low blood sugar I was getting
and approach these guys for an auto or just a hand shake.

Baseball will have to take Pete's rolling-stages of atonement
and backsliding as sufficient acts of contrition to permit his
HOF-induction, BEFORE baseball can ever be forgiven for
allowing illegal drugs to skew the very numbers upon which
the game is built and valued.

I'd have gone for the Buffet too! Even though I am a die-hard baseball fan. Nothing would stop me from a Las Vegas all you can eat buffet! image Pete Rose is just a person like all the rest of us on this small blue planet.

What are you doing in Vegas? Have a great trip!
  • Storm, I have to agree with you.

Nothing like a game who wants to continue to punish guys like Shoeless Joe, and Pete Rose, yet they glorify some of the biggest cheaters, who took some landmark records away from guys who done it the right way. Hypocrites? I would say so..

Eagle eye, I'm sorry, but hockey is so boring, I cannot get into it. Now, I understand your thought process a bit better. I did not know you were not a baseball fan, but I am sorry that you are not. You are missing out, my friend. The one thing that has stood the test of time is baseball. The greatest game ever invented.

Just kicking it here (Vegas) for 2 days.
Caesar's Palace said come on down, free room, free everything,
and they even threw in $700 cash for me just showing up. I pocketed
the money....will probably use it for card submissions. I played about
$10 on video poker just to keep the points rolling on my Rewards Card
which keeps the comps/cash value going, otherwise it expires if there's
no usage within a 6 month period. So, I'm here by myself...wife is out of town
shooting on location in D.C.....she's been gone for 4 weeks....back in 2 more weeks.

I'm kinda digging it. Leaving in the morning and driving back home. My room
is thrashed, junk food wrappers everywhere, beer bottles, etc. I've been watching
movies, playing games, and just surfing. I don't gamble anymore....I used to have
a gambling problem. Without the gambling, I've also stopped smoking....going on
    2 years now.

StanTheMan -- Although I can appreciate your love of the game and not wanting to miss the opportunity to meet Rose, you may just be better off missing out. Growing up in the 70's and 80's, he was my idol. The man left everything on the field and played the game the way it should be played. When I finally had the chance to meet him after a game at Wrigley, I was absolutely devistated.(I was 11 at the time) I caught him coming out of the locker room on his way to the team bus with Dallas Green...nobody else around. I handed him my best 68 Topps Rose card and politely asked "Can I have your autograph, Mr Rose?". After repeating this several times, he just looked at me and continued on his merry way. I'll never forget the feeling I left with that day. At the time, I had about 300 Rose cards....from his rookie on up. I can remember coming home and wanting to trade them all for Joe Charbaneau rookies...but I didn't. Anyway, I will always respect what he did on the field and believe that he should be in the Hall of Fame, but as a person, he's a real piece of crap! I met him again as an adult and my opinion didn't change. So, I guess my point here is that sometimes a dream is better off left as just that....a dream.

And by the way... EagleEye ----Have a good time out there!

  • I met him in Vegas. I had a good experience. We chatted about Pujols for about 10 minutes and then he signed a picture of he and I. Sure, it cost me money but I'd gladly pay the $99 to get a picture and auto with him while chatting good ole baseball. It was VERY obvious that the guy still loves the game.

I was walking through Ceasar's and thought I saw Pete. I turned and said "holy &%$# it's Pete Rose" some guy next to me turned and said the same thing.

While I appreciate you sharing your experience, I will say it again. I am not into if the guy is a jerk in his personal life or not, I enjoyed what he did on the field, and he is the all-time hits leader. Just to know you got to meet him, and can tell your children, and grandchildren, is cool enough for me.

Just like some of my other all-time favorites, such as Willie Mays, I know they are not the most friendly people, but I enjoyed what they done on a baseball field. Not everyone can be like Stan Musial, the nicest player I have ever met in my life. I can say Mr. Musial is a class act.

I can second that. I met Musial at the Chantilly show, I think it was last year or the year before. It was incredible. He's the kind of player/person you wished all players could be like. I still have the ball he signed sitting right here in front of my on my desk.

I've met a ton of players, the only other one I can say was a truly nice guy was Pops, Willie Stargell. I got the chance to sit with him for a few hours and talk baseball. He was a really nice guy, very genuine.

I met Reggie Jackson at the SEMA show last year. SEMA is a big aftermarket car show in Vegas. We were both looking at racing gages and I just started chatting cars with him. I mentioned that he was my favorite player as a kid and that George shouldn't have let him go. He laughed about that and he handed my his business card. I asked if he would sign my catalog and he did with a pretty nice personalization.

I'll scan the sig and post it later. Vegas is a good place to see athletes being themselves. I played blackjack with Devean George one night at Mandalay. We were playing $25/hand. He makes about 50 times more than I do and he said ouch everytime he lost.

I knew there was gonna be a post like this about Pete and you are absolutely right. A good friend of mine, I guess he was about 15 at the time when Rose was playing for the Reds, after a game at Veterans Stadium in Philly, my friend saw Pete sitting on the team bus next to the window with the window open - There weren't any other players on the bus and it seemed like Pete wasn't doing anything so my friend strolled over to the bus window, and asked Pete very politely if he could please sign the program. Pete's exact quote was, "F*** Off" - Dam nasty thing to say to a 15 year old kid, but my friend actually laughed about it later. That's not the only story I've ever heard about Rose being an arrogant SOB. But that's Pete.

No whale, maybe a small fish. For the past 10 years, my wife has been the one that has been kicking butt. She's hit so many jackpots here , but we've probably given back more than we've won. Since we're with Harrah's and they kinda all over the country; we can go to any Harrah's anytime and not pay a dime. They also own Caesar's Palace, Horseshoe, Rio, Paris, Imperial Palace, Flamingo, Bally's, Sheration, Grand Casino and a bunch of other properties/casinos out here as well. Every week, I get about 10 different offers in the mail to come stay at one of their properties; it's always comp. Some offer gifts (ie digital cameras, jewelry) , many shows, but I only like the ones with the cash image I pass on the ones that will say "we'll fly you to Reno or New Orleans (Harrah's casino)" in a private jet, etc.

Overall, it's a nice way to get away once in awhile. Anyway, packing up and hitting the road in a bit.

    Chris C:

Despite what he did on the field, he is baseball's all time L-O-S-E-R no matter how many stats he accumulated.

    He's baseball's all time better

He made Shoeless Joe Jackson much more appealing as a candidate for the Hall of Fame

He baseball cards from all the kids who sent him stuff during the 70s, turning it in to a local dealer for cash to drop at the Kentucky racing tracks

He ripped off the signers of the 500 HR hitters club walking with their $25,000 to $45,000 fee's

He precipitated Harmon Killebrew's having to declare bankrupcy.

He was so deep into his gambling debts that his 'bankers' threatened his life.

He elected to turn himself into MLB's offices...IN ORDER TO SAVE HIS LIFE.

He continued to lie to the entire country about his betting on and against his team.

    He's a convicted tax cheat.

Admittedly, he belongs in the Hall of Fame in my opinon for what he did on the field.

However, the year after he's left this earth.

    HAPPY COLLECTING!!!

I perceive him just fine. Sure, I'm a fan. But I also look at what many, many other athletes have done (Gooden, Strawberry, Steve Howe, Bonds, Clemens, Cobb....and the list could go on for days). There aren't many others that are belittled and ridiculed the way Rose is. It's pretty pathetic actually. What's the old saying about walking a mile in someone's shoes?

Personally, I really couldn't care less. To each their own. I'm not a huge fan of Rose the man. But I am a die-hard fan of Rose the player and athlete.

All I know is that is the doors to the Hall open up for Bonds and Clemens.....there had better be some re-consideration for Rose.

Not a big fan of him off the field but Pete gave 110% on every play in each game he played. I still remember how he would round 1st base on routine singles looking to extend it to a double if the outfielder wasn't paying attention. Whitey Ford was on the mark when he nicknamed Pete Rose "Charlie Hustle" very early in his career.

I was actually giving Pete a nice "pass" with my post - if ya gonna get a bit postal - how about quoting someone who said he was an ahole or something.

I have no axe to grind about him or any other player other than - today - I think they're overpaid at the expense of the average "Joe" who has to practically take out a loan to bring a family of 4 to the ballgame.

  • Mike,

I think you took my post the wrong way. My apologies. I wasn't jumping on you or going "postal". I was just joining the conversation and stating what I think of Rose. My response tied into your post, that's why I quoted you. It wasn't an attack of any kind. All's well. image

At least Pete never was "BFF" with an aspiring country singer. He is, however one of the top 10 infamous sport figures alive at this time. I would allow him to be VOTED on by a jury of his PEERS as far as the HOF goes. Pete's stuff is already displayed at the HOF and The Reds HOF. For the most part Clemens was a hired arm, Bonds is Bonds and Big Mac doesn't wanna talk about it. At least this thread wasn't titled " Just saw Pete Rose.......the dude's cute"...................

<< <i>I think Pete can have his good days - as I've posted before - my best friend and his wife had a good time meeting him!

Kind of a shame how he messed up - and if he had just told the truth? Perhaps he would be perceived in a different light?

Lee, do you need a remedial reading comprehension course too? chaz said "your wife" referring to the Mike that made the post.
