Coin show in Niagara Falls, NY April 4-6 Show Update

ajaanajaan Posts: 17,124 ✭✭✭✭✭
Gold and Silver Over Niagara. I was told 100 dealers. The largest show in the area. Sponsored by the Buffalo Numismatic Association and Niagara Falls coin club. I'll be there first thing Friday morning and most likely Saturday.

Across the street from the Seneca Niagara Casino. Good buffet lunch in the casino.

I met strikeoutXXX at the show on Friday. I was somewhat disappointed with the bourse. There were only about 50 different dealers with 100 tables. I would say about 4 of those dealt exclusively in World coins but many more did have some darkside material. The show seems smaller to me this year, the second year for this show. I heard many dealer make the same comment.

The floor traffic was very light, and combined with the great floor layout, that is, very, very wide aisles, made walking around really easy. No elbow bumping while going table to table.

I picked up a few coins, bought a Nazi coin that I misread the date on. image My best purchase was three George III crowns, AG-G, that cost me $43 in total. These coins have been going for $25+ each on eBay and I've been trying to put a roll of them together for about 5 years now. When I started out I wouldn't pay more than $15/ coin, but recently I had to raise that to $20/coin.

I also traded a buffet lunch at the casino to Jefff for some Canadian/Australian coins. Other than that it wasn't a real productive show.

I may go back today though. Kelly is going to be out all afternoon with her mentee students, so with nothing better to do I may just take the short drive up north to the Falls. I must admit, yesterday I was dead tired from having a very difficult day Thursday with a bunch of 8th grade Math students so I really wasn't in the best of moods on Friday, sorry about that Jeff.

Went back to the show today and bought the GB 1937 Proof Set. Case is nice, the coins are only average, nothing spectacular.

I also sold some coins to the same guy I bought the proof set from. Boy, I wish I could speak Russian. Everytime I made an offer on something, he had to call his dad in Philly and ask him. The person maning the table was his 20 year old son and the son's girlfriend. I wish I knew what they were saying to get an idea if my offer was too high or what.

The same thing happened when I sold him a fairly nice GB coin. Called his dad, talked to him, waited for dad to call back and then try to negotiate through someone speaking Russian.

While watching the table for a dealer friend who had to step out, I hear 'Mr. Rupp!!!' it was two of my students. Oh geez! I can't get away from this kids. They are Boy Scouts and the Boy Scouts were holding a numismatic badge seminar or something at the show.

ajaan - nice updates. Wish I was there.

I have a brother who lives in Williamsville. I think it's only a few minutes from Niagara.
Would have been a good excuse to visit him.

My best friend is from Mass but his wife is from Endicott NY. They got married Owego NY so we went up there to be in the wedding. After the wedding we drove to Niagra and road around in Canada. I simply fell in love with that area, well minus Buffalo that is. I wasn't too fond of that city. Canada was stunning and I would love to live there. Of course, NC isn't too shabby when it comes to beauty!

Buffalo, like any old city, has its nice parts and crummy parts. Delaware Park is really quite nice as are the homes designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

We came through a run down section of the town so that is why I say that. I think the bridge we crossed was the Peace Bridge. I didn't want to stick around in the section of Buffalo we were in so we did not do any city exploring. I guess when you live around that area it is a bit easier to se the good sides of the city. When passing through you only get a quick glimpse.

    Small world.

I don't know this for a fact but I always asumed Buffalo was coin collecting town.
    Long winters and all.

I remember the IBM plant and thinking, man I bet this town was bumping at one time. Now it has gotten somewhat ran down. Almost like a ghost town.

I wil lsay this....coming from NC and going to NY is an experience. After driving through Pennsyltucky and finally getting to NY, I was looking forward to resting and grabbing some food. Well I forgot I wasn't in the south anymore and treid to strike up a conversation with the food server. Needless to say he acted like he was pissed off at me because I was being nice. Had a similar experience at the McDonalds. I asked the lady how she was doing and she never answered. Then I told her to have a good day as I was leaving, she looked like I had punched her. Most people were friendly but not like they are in the south. That was my first and only trip to NY. I would like to drive back through the Village of Horse Heads area. Pretty driving out there.... You know, dodging the deer running around and the dead carcasses on the road! image

My brother used to live in Horseheads, now is in Elmira. Newtown Battle Field is really nice in Horseheads. I love that area also. Soaring is a real thrill.

I know, I know, 9 months of winter and 3 months of poor ice skating. image

I did attend this giant indoor flea market in Cheektowaga one time.
Had a real decent coin dealer and quite a few sports card guys.

P.S. Beef on weck is one of my alltime favorites!

Probably, but I'm not familiar with it.
Good luck at the show if you're going tomorrow.
Maybe you can pick-up some last minute deals.
