If someone dropped 100K in your lap, how long would it last?

MrEurekaMrEureka Posts: 24,404 ✭✭✭✭✭
Your rich uncle just gave you 100K for your birthday. The only catch is you have to spend the money on rare coins. How long will the money last?

It depends on what opportunities presented themselves and when they did so. I would probably blow $20k fairly quickly, just to take the pressure off. After that, I would have no specific timetable and could easily see the money lasting one year or longer.

Pay debts first, then invest the rest. I'm glad I broke myself of the "electronics junkie" mentality. I know people that have every gadget and doodad known to man and tens of thousands in credit card debt attached to each of these objects that rapidly depreciate.

It's all about the opportunities. I'd last until May 26th, or maybe September 12, but certainly no longer.

There are five key coins that I would try to buy fairly quickly if available total of about 30K for those. After that I would take my time locating quality coins to finish out the sets that I'm working on. Finding quality coins would be what would determine how long the money would last more so than the dollar value in this case. I would guess a year or so if I dont compromise what I'm looking for.

    Maybe they are coin debts.image

I would try to stretch it out for about a year or more. 3 annual coin shows that I usually attend and my usual weekend jaunts. I would attempt to stay within the realm of coins I collected prior. Maybe one or two exceptions. A nice F-VF 1796/7 Half
  • I'm with RYK. I think I could blow through 10-20% right away. The balance would probably take much longer to spend.
  • It would last a while as I would search for just the right coins to buy no more widgets .

Long enough to get that 1932-D ms66 Washington...if I could find the rest of the money someplace. image
  • I would probably try to prioritize my want list and, as you stated, wait for the appropriate opportunites (i.e. auctions). The money would probably be gone by the end of the Baltimore ANA.

The problem for me is that the coins that I would like to purchase with that sort of budget do not come along every day - they are rare. That is why they call them rare coins. It's not like a 1909-S VDB Lincoln or a 1916-D dime, which can be purchased in any grade any day of the week. A 1792 half disme or an 1802 half dime, or even a 1797 13 stars half dime can only be purchased when one of the very few owners decides to sell. You must then be ready to strike when opportunity knocks. Of course, this is all based upon the premise that the IRS does not deplete that $100K down to an unrealistic level before I even get the chance to look.

If for coins only I'd try to perfect my 7070. Fill the rest of the holes with as high grades as possible and then upgrade what I can with the leftover money.

With the right combination of luck and diligence, I'd rip through $100K in 7-10 years.

The stuff I am looking for is not common, I would probably splurge on a Turbin Half Eagle or two and keep working on my Classic head Variety set while filling in blanks in the more common Indian Half Eagle set.

My guess is that would last about 2 years.

Would spend about half on a nice PCGS AU Chain cent, and then the rest on a nice silver Libertas Medal.

If I DIDNT have to buy a coin item? I would buy a Norman Rockwell drawing.

I'd probably spend about half of it within a few weeks and then sit on the rest for a couple years waiting for the right opportunities to present themselves.

100k is plenty to have invested unless you're a flipper or you have a very long strategy. I'd be content to build a journeyman's collection, plenty diverse, and to take my time. JMO

I have no idea how long a $100K would last because if someone gave me that much I would drop dead on the spot.

    But if it happened:

    (1) Buy the complete Pan-Pac set with copper frame.

    (2) finish my FE/IHC set

    (3) complete my US Type Gold set

    (4) finish my Cuban & Mexico Gold type sets

Remainder would go towards whatever sparks my fancy image

I'm with TD - cheerios sacs would get my attention too.

It would last exactly how long it took to find a coin worthy of spending it on.
