1903-O for the VAM guys

Can someone explain to me what is going on with the IGWT on this reverse? It looks very messy on the last 3 words. Also I believe that is a clash beneath the wing near the upper part of the leaves, any thoughts?

IGWT is typically "messy" where you indicate, so nothing special there. There is a clash where you see one, and also coming from the top of the eagle's wing and inside the left wreath. Look for letter transfers on the obverse in front of the neck, although judging from the clash above the wing there might not be anything there.

    John:

That looks like a pretty significant gouge line running from the eagle's left wing through the A in AMERICA. I haven't seen one of those before.
    When in doubt, don't.

Here is another pic of the lower reverse and the front of the neck. There is something in front of the neck, a diagonal line that looks on the surface not a scratch afterwards. There also seems to be scratches near the one and the leaves.

Now that you have the obverse, it also looks like the vam 4a, look at the lips.

When I blow up the pics a little bit more the doubling at the top of the 3 becomes very apparent along with the spike on the lip as noted.

That is the VAM4A. I've got mine at ANACS right now for slabbing. There are pictures of my coin on the VAM4A page that you can compare against.

Leroy described that bump at the neck as an ovaloid. John Roberts, the VAM guy at ANACS added some interesting commentary to the 1903-O VAM4A page. Your should check it out at

  • I believe that's only the second R-6 attributed for this date.
