Question on Omaha PCGS coins.

ajaanajaan Posts: 17,530 ✭✭✭✭✭
Went to a coin show today. I only collect World coins, but one of my favorite dealers in Canadian coins had some Omaha PCGS Roosevelt Dimes for sale. All were MS66, dates: 1946-D, 1946-S, 1947-D, 1947-S, and 1956-D. Does the 'Omaha' make these coins more desirable? What would the going price be for these dates? Thanks.

  • I personally would never pay a premium for a Omaha Bank Hoard coins, just too many of them, but thats just me.. I have a feeling most people are sick of seeing them.

  • I think the Omaha hoard has been mentioned on these boards before, and a general consensus is that they are a point or two over graded, possibly due to the bulk submission.

Someone please correct me if this is not a general feeling of the group.

I agree with LindeDad and amiller. In fact, I find it amusing when I read some seller on eBay talking about the "prestigious Omaha bank hoard" pedigree. In my opinion, an Omaha bank hoard pedigree means that one should very carefully examine the coin beofre buying it. That said, as I recall there is one poster who is trying for a complete collection of Omaha bank hoard coins. I think that would be an amusing and interesting collection, but not one that I'd particularly desire.

  • No premium should be paid. Besides inferior quality grading, the Imaha Bank Hoard has caused the price of a lot of dates to go down.

I has just recently disposed of a collector's washington quarter set, and of the 15 Omaha Bank quarters he had only two were graded correctly IMO, most were a point to 2 points off. Ms-66 coins withcontact hits everywhere and limited luster, and so forth.

  • I Agree Also with the majority here and I Own some of them! I Wanted to see them in hand to Compare to others and In my opinion they are Overgraded to say the Least and some are just plain Ugly. Most of The Omaha Hoard Lincoln Cents I Own are MS66RD's (or so says the Sticker), but they would be Lucky to get a RB Designation in the Real World. Ray in Florida..

Here's a Link to a thread I posted in '05 about what I found out about the Omaha Bank Hoard. To my knowledge this information hasn't changed in the past three years.

  • I've seen alot of the OBH Franklins on Heritage. Most of them looked pretty crappy, but I don't
think that Heritage really did a good job on the pics. They looked more like scans. I have seen
OBH Franklins on other sites and in hand, and they weren't as bad as I thought, but I would
not pay a premium for them, and I think they were a bit overgraded. Same may be true for
    the Roosies.

I agree that these are not worth a premium. Not all of them are dog's though. I have a few in my collection:

The price is what the seller and buyer both agree to.
  • Well here is a collection of Roosie's in all Omaha Bank PCGS slabs.. If you have any of the missing ones, I would be happy to talk with you about buying them. I will agree with some that a few are overgraded, but there are some that are on the money. image

I wouldn't buy another if I couldn't see it first.
I had a few and moved them along. This one I kept and I like it fine.

  • I can recall having 3 OBH coins. 1 was about 3 points overgraded, 1 was about right, 1 was about 2 points undergraded. All over the chart, typical of regular PCGS coins anyhow in my view.

I have several Omaha Walker 1/2's I didn't pay a premium for them and I wouldn't. Many of them are nicely preserved coins and they get high grades, but if anything the hoard lowered the going price for the coins it didn't increase them.

The OBH has hurt a lot of people.

Populations are bloated - filled with overly generous/ optimistically graded coins (at best)!

Actually, it's not amusing at all. Trust & crediblity have been damaged severely.

Narrow-mindedness and short-sightedness have NOT helped matters, at all.

Way too many people have noticed the inconsistencies and have lost Faith. image

I believe the OBH made it's debut in the Spring of 2005 for some series like the Franklin haves. If anyone has records of the PCGS Population reports for late 2004 or early 2005 please PM me.
