"Roasted" Washington Dollar

Awhile back there was an ebay auction for a pres. dollar very rare etc etc missing gold layer. Well, as an experiment I took one and heated it up over a propane torch to red hot. When it cooled, there it was the very rare etc etc missing gold layer.

So If you are offered one, consider this.

It does make for a VERY nice large cent though, I rather like the design in copper......

  • Did it remove the layer.... or just change the color?

If it got hot enough to fuse the plating into the metal to change the color that way.....maybe. The shiny gold is gone and now its flat bronzish.

I'm pretty sure metal composition of the new Presidential dollars is identical to the Sac
No plating involved, just a copper/zinc alloy with a little magnesium and nickel thrown in.
