1928 Peace - Is she worthy of a trip to NCS? ... NEW IMAGES

DieClashDieClash Posts: 3,688 ✭✭✭
I've posted this coin before. It was part of a collection that I purchased from a retired school Teacher a few years ago. It was inherited from his father, in the late 1960's or early 70s. This specimen has obviously been harshly cleaned with a sharp-pointed instrument.

I've never used NCS and I don't know if they can conserve this type of damage. I am wondering if they can fix the problems - what do you think?

Also, any suggestions or opinions as to grade if she didn't have the damage are welcome!

When I re-imaged the coin I noticed some additional scratches to the right of Liberty's neck above TRVST and below her trailing hair.

It's difficult to see in the image but someone has etched the numerals 4 and 3 in the field.

Someone definitely did not like her imageimageimageimage

Edited: to include after images. After I dipped her in EZest Coin Cleaner. I dipped it twice for about 7-seconds both times between rinses in water ana a gentle clean with liquid soap. After the second dip I gave her a bath in acetone. The images are pretty high resolution so it shows all the warts and blemishes.

It actually looks much better in-hand after removing surface crud than the pictures would indicate. However, as depicted below this coin has suffered some harsh treatment over the years image

1928 Peace dollars have seen a definite gain over the last few months.
I would think it would be worth a trip to NCS as even with the damage (graffiti) it is a $450.00++ coin.

They cant fix the rim problems or the scratches. I would sell it as is. Many people need this coin to fill that empty spot in thier album and would ake this coin in a heartbeat.

That's what I thought. I've actually contacted NCS and provided a link to this thread. PCGS monitors willing, I will update the thread with their response.

So, any opinions as to grade details, unsullied?

I would dip the stain off the obverse and then send it to ANACS to get slabbed in a problem holder. It would probaby sell better because the buyer would have assurance that it is a genuine 28-P.

I examined this one under 30x magnification. There's alot of harilines. Most are from die polishing as they are prolific in the filelds but stop at the devices. However, many go through the devices too. This baby was not only defaced with some heavy cleaning whith a sharp object and grafitti, but also was the victim of an abarasive cleaning once upon a time. I have some MS70 and a jar of eZest and I am tempted to dip her. But aside from having a consistently colored skin, I'm afraid she'll look worse after the dip.

But I appreciate the advice nonetheless.

Oh, BTW.... I examined the reverse under the 30x monocular and I could not detect any signs that a mint mark had been obliterated. But both obverse and reverse show signs of an abrasive cleaining at some point in the past.

$450 is the price for a MS60 problem free piece. I think this piece is worth more around $275 maximum.

NCS will eb able to put it in a detail holder, but they can't reverse the damage.

I agree - dip it gently to get the ugly brown stuff off and send it to ANACS.

the 28 peace has it's die markers on the obverse as someone here with access to the guide on counterfeit coins could chime in with more specifics.when someone does chime in with die markers and your 30 power will settle if it's a removed mint mark or not but there is more to just looking where the mint mark is/was or isn't

Placid, thanks for the link! I can verify that the specimen imaged in this thread is genuine based on the die scratch from the B in LIBERTY through the ray, even though the coin has been harshly cleaned you can still detect the die scratch.
