The New Journal of East Asian Numismatics
In the second half of 1994, Bruce W. Smith and Michael Chou began publication of the Journal of East Asian Numismatics for the benefit of collectors world wide. Through 1998, eighteen issues were published, containing important original articles, reprints of important but difficult to find older articles, translations of articles from Chinese to English and English to Chinese, news, book reviews and more. After a ten year absence, the JEAN magazine will return in the Spring of 2008, this time as a free online journal, and part of the JEANWebsite.
The new journal will contain news, book reviews and articles as before, but we have added a Question & Answer column and will report on collecting inside China, including where to find coin markets and numismatic books, coin shows, auctions and coin exhibits in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
The JEAN website is intended to be a portal to information on and websites related to coins, paper money, tokens, medals and other numismatic items of the Far East. This includes not only China, but also Japan, Korea, Tibet, Vietnam and other areas of Southeast Asia. Our goal is to be the place everyone will go to first when looking to buy or sell, when looking for information or prices, or links to other websites.
Because the back issues of the Journal of East Asian Numismatics were destroyed in a typhoon in Taiwan, we will be placing the text of all 18 back issues on the website. We will have an extensive and annotated list of links to other sites -- numismatic societies, mints, museums, banks, private numismatic sites, and more -- and a separate group of links to auction companies around the world. Many auction companies now have their catalogs -- past and present -- available online along with the prices realized in those sales. This is valuable information for those bidding in future auctions. The links to numismatic grading and certification companies are also useful because some of these -- PCGS and NGC for example -- publish reports online on exactly what coins have been certified and how many in each grade.
Another important feature of the JEAN website will be its quick reference area. Clicking on this button will bring up such things as dating charts, catalog cross reference numbers, weight and measure conversion tables, lists of dynasties and rulers, reign title indexes, and more. Also planned is a database on forgeries of modern Chinese coins and how to identify them.
We invite our readers around the world to send us information to publish, including news (especially on books and magazines published in China, and excavations of Chinese coins), original articles, details of recently discovered coins and notes, information on upcoming coin shows and auctions, and other information.
