Please Grade A 1921-D Morgan

Here's a 1921-D Morgan for your grading opinions. As always, thanks in advance for any grade opinions and/or comments.

notes:

1. Toning spot on obverse; When I found this one, it was in a 2x2 with broken mylar. The toned spot at cap is in the shape of the broken mylar. If you think I should give it a quick dip in diluted eZest (or something similar) to remove the toning spot & reverse milk spots, let me know. I should follow that up by saying that I am generally against dipping, but could make an exception (with silver).
2. Only obverse hit to speak of is somewhat shallow, in the hair above the ear.
3. Only reverse hit to speak of is an extremely shallow (almost mark) in field between left wing & wreath.
4. That's a small black mark (not rim nick) on reverse rim at 6:00.
5. Faint lines next to right wing are on mylar
6. Line at NE of ONE is die scratch.
7. Line at ICA is part of die crack
8. Appearance; Full satin luster & somewhat frosted devices.

Edited to add: More pics. I can't be completely sure this one in the hair is a hit. Possible strike through?

Nice coin, but strike limited to MS64.

All coins of this date are limited by their strike.

  • I agree with Stuart's grade of 64, though, I'm leaning towards high end 64. For what these (21-D's) go for in 64, it's worth adding to a submission sooner or later.
  • MS64

A coin that's a week strike is a part of the minting process and not post damage, and should never affect the grade. However, if it's determined that the flatness was caused from having other coins stacked on top, for many years, then this is post mint, and would affect the grade.

It's the same thing with earlier Large Cents and Half Cents. The dies and strikes where poor, so the grading is adjusted accordingly. The New Orleans Mint is known for poor strikes, and if you had a completely mark free 1904-O but the coin was weekly struck, you could still obtain a grade of MS69-MS70.

FULLNESS of STRIKE is part of the Market Grading process, so it does affect the grade.

You guys are right on the MS64 grade, dont know why I said 63.......

  • I just checked these out over at Heritage, and I'm feeling pretty pretty confident about the 64 grade. I didn't have time to post all of the reverses.

Based on the photo, you've got a worse issue than strike. The luster is dull.

    MS63 max.

Quite a difference in the 21 D's that you posted, proving once again photo's can be deceiving.
If all of those are 65's, so is the one you posted. My first inclination was "high end" 64 and guess I'll stick with that (first impressions are usually right, I find in my case).
    Nice 21 D.
    Best wishes,

Definitely a 64 and a nice one at that...

    That first 21-D is AWSOME!
    Beautiful 65 image
  • I'd have to agree with most responses and say MS-64.

The luster is not dull. Those pictures were taken without a flash. I'm still not able to use the flash with lustrous coins, they come out overexposed.

I had to enlarge those four PCGS coins once again, just to make sure, but the strike on the one I've posted is stronger than all four of them (certainly, much better than the '21-D in the series & coin era slab).
