Question on the 1959 Topps "Lou" Burdette

I just bought one of these off of ebay where he is posing as a left hander and it is graded a PSA 7. I was expecting it to go for MUCH higher than it did, but I think I got a steal personally.

Here's my question, what is the true background story behind the card and how rare is it in coparison to the corrected version? I've heard snipits of the story because of all the hoopla surrounding the Smoltz card in this years Heritage, but I'm wanting to know the real deal.

Thanks guys and I can't wait to post scans of all the beauties that I've been picking up lately!!!!!! You all will be shocked at just how quickly I've progressed.

    It was Spahn's glove.

Here's a link to some background.

  • Thanks a ton. So no corrected version? No big deal if there isn't, just curious since they had two Smoltz's in the 08 set.
  • By the way, here's the one I picked up (ebay scan) just in case anyone hasn't seen one.

Burdette is considered a common card, there is no corrected version so no added value, just novelty interest.

Alright thanks for the help. I'm still very happy with what I paid considering the player and the grade. $15 delivered for a nicely centered 7 from the '59 set of a legend that played for my favorite club! Not too shabby in my opinion.
  • Also, wasn't his first name spelled LEW which was also an uncorrected error?
  • Ive heard the same story in many other places as well that Burdette always the practical joker, picked up Spahn's glove and posed as a rightie just to screw with Topps

As for the Lou/Lew thing- he always spelled and signed his own name "L-O-U" but everyone else spelled it "L-E-W." Not sure why the difference though, but his full name was Selva Lewis Burdette (which is probably why the media assumed it was LEW). The different card manufacturers went back and forth on the two different spellings

My highest collecting priority has been Burdette for a while now (always great to see other people appreciating him) and among my favorite cards are the couple of signed ones I have since where he spells it one way and the name on the card is another
