Time for another case break. Received a sweet deal on a case of these from our friends at ORANGE COUNTY SPORTS CARDS. Check out their prices, some sweet deals to be found.
http://www.ocsportscards.com/servlet/StoreFront
Paid $1000 for a 4 box case when they came out around a year ago, was able to get this case for alot less $628. I was very happy with that case and this one is starting out just as hot, Triple Jersey Autograph of Reggie Bush receiving version last case was his rushing version.

Why feel the need to try and deflect the focus somewhere else?? I stated an opinion which in this case is pretty spot on. They are an ugly design period! If you like them then more power to you.
The fact that case prices have dropped $400 in a years time shows that collector's aren't all too crazy about these either. Plus are those prices you list from Beckett?? Maybe a more accurate pricing would be closed Ebay auctions. I can promise you NOBODY is paying anywhere near those prices for 99% of those cards. Even at $628 you most likely lost money.
Enjoy your modern junk!

Let it go guys. Wintersfan, are you trying to instigate a fight and do you enjoy belittling what someone else finds fun and cool? You said somethin the first time and that's fine but to come back again and try and pick another fight and get a response is ridiculous. He dropped the attack that you made on what he likes and respectfully said good luck on your collection. So many of you guys on here are so close minded about what is "right" to collect and what everyone "should" collect, that it grows tiring after awhile.
You guys wonder why kids don't like the hobby anymore and complain about card companies. I got news for most of you, look in the mirror...
Seldom worth buying.

<< <i>Nice stuff, but I just can't get my mind around spending that kind of scratch for modern stuff. I could do some serious damage on my HOF rookie collection with $600.
Bob... >>
I have no problem with someone spending their money on whatever makes them happy in this hobby. Some like modern and some like vintage. There is enough room for all of us. I just enjoy how card companies today give no real value with pretty much everything they make and leave it up to guys like mikefromchester to try and tell us otherwise.
10 years ago it was pretty cool(and rare) to get a Nolan Ryan autograph in a pack of cards. Now he is in how many baseball products each year?? For me it's a great deal because I can pick up HOF autos for $25 or less in many cases but it also waters down the chance that this modern stuff will ever go up in value. The card companies try by having an autograph card numbered to 299 but also making sure to do three parallels of 25, 10 and 1. What's the difference?? It's the same player and the same autograph. I'll take the one numbered at 299 and save money instead of getting into a bidding war because there is one numbered to 10 that seems like it is more valuable just because of a company created scarecity. It's turned into a joke in my opinion.

Mostly, I think it has to do with the above array of card-packs retailing for $628.
Scratch-off lottery tickets are fun, too. After the fun, they usually return about the
same as the above $628 retail buy. Sometimes, even a little more.
Folks should buy/collect whatever they enjoy. Trying to get kids in is a lost cause;
for whatever reason.

I'm a kid so I think I have a pretty good viewpoint on the topic. While I agree that card prices for boxes is a huge thing, the attitude towards most young collectors is often a negative one from what I have seen. Most try to take advantage of us and often times we get laughed for what we collect. I have a friend that USED to collect Jonny Gomes the RF for the Rays. Me and him went to a show at a nearby mall, I think, last summer and when he asked a dealer if he had and Gomes cards the dealer replied " I don't have any of that crap, do I look like ebay?". My friend grew tired of collecting quickly after that and dropped the whole thing all together.
I agree with box prices, but there's more than meets the eye in most cases.

Why because I speak my mind?? Why would that make me miserable?? Sorry if the truth hurts but I collect and work in this hobby so I know of what I speak.

Well son please show some respect to your elders. I'm probably old enough to be your dad if you are a "kid". Also "me and him" almost made me lose my dinner. It should be "he and I went to a show".
Now onto the Jonny Gomes issue. Your friend needs to collect what he wants and likes. The dealer was totally wrong in the way he treated your buddy. As I said before there is room for everybody. He likes Jonny Gomes and I like Brian Winters and the next guy likes who he likes. That's what makes the hobby keep moving forward with fresh blood.
its because a stupid box of cards costs $250 lol.

I apologize I did not see that as a question. I took it as being your statement and I thanked you for it.
I myself like having the mirror behind the players on the cards. If I saw the cards as ugly like you and I'm sure many others I'd never purchased a second case. The Triple Jersey Autographs could had been lighter and had the Player image a little larger, maybe a close up of the player without their helmets instead of them in action. I'm like most if not all collectors, not a fan of the sticker autographs But this is only how I feel and like I said earlier I appreciate your take on the product, as stated being UGLY.
The Fact that the cases has dropped $400 may be like you said, cause Topps passed on doing them again. But I think the way Topps market them was a mistake. They was released way after the football season in April and came out way over priced at $1000 and higher a case. Plus I think the economy is damaging our hobby, like everything else at this time. You can get some sweet deals on almost anything these days. My Father taught me to buy when everyone is selling, which worked great for him and has served me fairly good so far in life.
These are Beckett prices and we all know they are just numbers and we also should know the off season is not a good time to sale, so I'm sure you are accurate if I wanted to Ebay them now I'd get less then if it would during the football season.
"Enjoy your modern junk!", I will and you enjoy your Winter's Collection. I respect what others collect even if it's not my bag and I would never call anyone's else's stuff Junk, even if it was junk in my eyes.
Thanks, Mike

Well I will retract my "modern junk" comment as I have some of that junk in my collection as well.
I still stand by my comments about the Beckett value's. I don't care what time of year it is but most cards will not bring those prices. That's why I got out of ripping cases a couple of years ago. You don't get much bang for your buck anymore with a market that is flooded with product. It's too hard for one to compete with all of the other products out there and in the end it just waters down the values.
<< <i>Brian Winters fan.....you should apologize to the kid, goot, for you dumb comment about his proper english. Ended up making you come off as an idiot even more than your other comments. >>
Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.
<< <i>Brian Winters fan.....you should apologize to the kid, goot, for you dumb comment about his proper english. Ended up making you come off as an idiot even more than your other comments. >>
Boy what's happened to this place. Should we all get in a circle and sing kumbya.
I suppose some aren't happy unless they have to proclaim they are more strongerer , the brighterest, More Richerer or have a better collekshin than the next guy .
Now mine you can pick on .
If someone can't share their views on a product around here - good, bad or ugly - then what good is this board? A guy points out that a particular product is ugly and he's got kids lined up around the block because they can't handle a negative comment. Perhaps they were coddled as children...perhaps they're used to only "positive reinforcement" as modern society would provide. Let me tell ya, kids, if you can't handle a simple negative comment about what is arguably the ugliest product ever released, well then I can't wait until something that is actually tragic happens in your life.
Viva Xanax. That's what it's there for, right?
<< <i>Opinions should be, and usually are given, and everyone is entitled to them. Where I think this thread took a wrong turn was that Mikefromchester thanked Wintersfan for his original opinion, and wintersfan seemed to take that thank you as sarcasm and went off a little on Mikefromchester. The original opinion expressed by wintersfan was not bashed. >>
Thats excatly what happened I think. Instead of trying to walk into a confrontation by saying something Mike took the high road and just thanked him and went on.
Bottom line is collect what you want and like. I agree the cards are ugly but I am not going to bash someone for collecting them.
I also enjoy seeing some of the box breaks of various cards that come out , it don't matter to me if they are ugly or not , it is one persons way of letting us know what is out there, a pretty valuable vehicle for our next choice of what we may purchase next .
I see nothing wrong with a person saying
" Some of the he ugliest cards ever made "
Where it takes a turn is when someone says to, you "Even at $628 you most likely lost money
Enjoy your modern junk"
First of all who's saying they are collecting for the monetary value alone ?
Then to go on and say to Goot ,
" Well son please show some respect to your elders. I'm probably old enough to be your dad if you are a "kid". Also "me and him" almost made me lose my dinner. It should be "he and I went to a show".
Now you got the balls to think you have the right to be a corrector of grammar , like you're grading his term paper or something .
Did it really bother you that much that you really almost lost your dinner or do you just feel like picking a fight with whoever will fight you from behind the safety of your computer ?
That's my opinion , that is the way it looked to me .
Now if someone wants to show something , they might not out of fear someone might make fun , basically call them a loser
{In a roundabout way }
But you would never call one's collection junk ?
But you just did , no matter how many times you take it back .
"Modern junk" is a term that is (was) widely used on this forum before the influx of thin-skinned folks who take those words so personally. They are not words to belittle a collection, they are words to describe the majority of modern products.
As for pointing out the disgusting use of the English language, was it worth pointing out? Nah. Was it enough to lose dinner over, possibly. I think with language skills exhibited by "Me and him", a term paper is either a long way off, or never-to-be-realized. I don't recall too many term papers in remedial english.
Nobody's looking to pick a fight here. People needing to grow an extra layer of skin or two abound.

Well, I can't say I wasn't expecting that .
I am rarely angered though Mr. Gumby .
Even now , it's all good .
I only wanted to say how it looked to me that's about it .
I like Goot , I think he's a good and honest guy so when I saw someone demand respect without giving any it bothered me a little .
I apologize for the rant .

If more people had your attitude this would be a better place!! Seriously!!
JeremyDie, aren't you same guy who mentioned earlier in another post that you would rather spend your money on a hot dog and coke than have Steve Garveys auto and could care less about the guy. What's the difference between your comment and BrianWinters comment? You also mentioned you could care less about what happens to your collection when you pass away. If having the state take possession of your collection than passing it on to you family isn't a sign of misery than I don't what is. Hypocrisy at its best.
