Slab fakes. Do the barcodes scan correctly?

JoeLewisJoeLewis Posts: 1,913 ✭✭✭✭
I just thought about this. Does anyone know if the barcodes scan successfully on the fake slabs? I'm sure they do, but maybe not.

Funny that you should mention that observation. The thread earlier in the week that showed the slabs had two different coins with the same certification number but the bar codes are different...look at them carefully. The bars were arranged with different configurations, I would suspect that would mean different bar codes. Just an observation.
Thread from earlier this week with the photos of the slabs

Edited to add: Seems like this scam could be easily fixed with a simple bar code reader.

I wouldn't depend on being able to scan the barcodes to determine if a slab is fake.

Software to create scanable bar codes are available all over the internet free or nearly free. Bar codes can be printed using most all current printers. There are also a number of different encoding standards for bar codes and most scanners will read a number of different formats with no problems or indication of the standard used. The bar code format standards are also available to anyone.

There's another thread concerning fake slabs from China that shows pics of an 1858-O half slab and an 1800 dollar slab. Both slabs appear to have the same bar code. I'm guessing the counterfeiters are hoping that no one checks the bar codes.

I am thinking this also. It is one step they do not have to do right now so they probably are not there yet. Once this catches on then they have the option to start doing it. This never ends.
